Box Score LYNDHURST, N.J. – Sophomore Andrew LaMura (Brick, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) hit a game-tying two-run home run and freshman Jason Polgano (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) ended the game with a walk-off single as Felician College defeated visiting Dowling College, 4-3, in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.
Dowling (24-11) is ranked No. 5 in the most recent NCAA Division II East Region writers' poll.
Six Felician pitchers combined on a four-hitter, with senior right-hander Lawrence Schoer (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) (1-2) striking out all three batters he faced in the top of the ninth inning to earn the victory. LaMura finished 3 for 4, and Polgano was one of four other Golden Falcons with two hits. Freshman Bruce Strickland (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) blasted two triples and scored twice.
Felician (19-26) accumulated 14 base hits on the day. The Golden Falcons survived leaving 14 runners on base and having two others thrown out at home plate.
Dowling scored a run without a hit in the top of the first, but Felician answered when Strickland tripled with two outs and scored on a single by Brennan Price (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex). In the fourth, Golden Lion junior second-baseman Chris Appell (Westbury, N.Y./W.T. Clarke) lined a two-run home run over the right field fence. The Golden Falcon bullpen kept Dowling off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
In the home half of the seventh, Strickland tripled to left field with one out, but was cut down at the plate on Price's ground ball to first base. LaMura followed by launching an 1-and-0 offering out of the park in right-center field for his first career homer.
After Schoer used 14 pitches to strike out the side in the ninth, Strickland led off the bottom half with a walk. Price attempted to sacrifice before being issued a free pass, and LaMura did the same to load the bases. On a full count, Polgano hit a long fly ball to center that one-hopped the fence, plating Strickland to give Felician the victory.
Matt Kleinstein (Marlboro, N.J./Colts Neck) and J.R. Meneses (Lake Worth, Fla./Zion Lutheran) each went 2 for 3 for the Golden Falcons, who finish the regular season by traveling to St. Thomas Aquinas College for a 3:30 p.m. contest on Wednesday.
