Baseball Stopped By Chestnut Hill, 6-3 And 5-2

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LYNDHURST, N.J. – Chestnut Hill College scored two runs in both the eighth and ninth innings to earn a 5-2 Game 2 victory and a sweep of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference baseball doubleheader against host Felician College on Thursday evening at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. Chestnut Hill was triumphant in Game 1, 6-3.

Chestnut Hill (18-7, 11-3 CACC) is ranked No. 9 in the most recent NCAA Division II East Region writers' poll.

Felician (13-19, 7-5) was limited to eight base hits on the day. The Golden Falcons combined to commit five errors in the two games, and six of the 11 runs they yielded were unearned.

Felician overcame an early 1-0 Game 2 deficit by tallying twice in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophomore Andrew LaMura (Brick, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) drove in a run with a two-out triple. Following a walk, LaMura scored on the back end of a double-steal.

Felician's 2-1 edge held until the top of the eighth. CHC put runners on first and second with one out on an infield hit and walk. Both runners moved up on a balk, and one out later, Joseph Monaghan (Doylestown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) hit a ball deep into the shortstop hole. Monaghan beat the play to first base to tie the game, and the go-ahead run scored when the throw got past first.

The Griffins tacked on two runs in the ninth on sacrifice flies by McLaughlin and Taylor Steen (New Egypt, N.J./St. Joseph). Felician put its first two runners on in the bottom of the ninth before Vincent Manzella (Matawan, N.J./Matawan Regional) retired the next three hitters for his fourth save of the season.

Both starting pitchers were solid in no-decisions. Felician's Steven Slagmolen (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) allowed one run on four hits in six innings, striking out four and walking none. His counterpart from the Griffins, Zachary Crim (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) gave up two runs on two hits over six frames with five strikeouts. Sophomore Austin DiBonaventure (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) (3-2) picked up the win with a scoreless seventh. Brandon DiBona (Southampton, Pa./William Tennent) was 3 for 4 for CHC, while LaMura had two hits for the Golden Falcons.

In Game 1, Felician was held to one hit over eight innings by CHC senior right-hander Dominic Raia (Philadelphia, Pa./Girard Academic) (4-1). The Golden Falcons reached Raia for three runs on two hits in the ninth, sending the tying run to the plate, before Manzella entered for a one-out save. Raia finished with 10 strikeouts and four walks in 8 2/3 innings.

Just two of the Griffins' six runs were earned. Felician senior lefty Jack Fowler (Shrewsbury, N.J./Red Bank Regional) gave up four runs (two earned) on five hits with four strikeouts over five innings. CHC scored on a throwing error in the fourth inning, then picked up three runs on three hits in the fifth. A pair of runs in the seventh off of the Golden Falcon bullpen completed the scoring for the visitors.

Steen and Michael McLaughlin (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) had two hits apiece for Chestnut Hill. Felician's J.R. Meneses (Lake Worth, Fla./Zion Lutheran) was 2 for 3 with a triple.

Felician travels to Post University for another CACC twinbill on Saturday in Waterbury, Conn.
