Box Score 2 MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Felician University sophomore center fielder Matt Diesel (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) hit a three-run first-inning home run and the Golden Falcons went on to a 10-7 non-conference baseball victory over Molloy College during the Northeast Challenge on Saturday afternoon at the Ripken Experience complex. Later on Saturday, Felician lost to Stonehill College, 15-4.
Senior shortstop Ralph Caccavale (Massapequa, N.Y.) went a combined 6 for 7 with four runs batted in during the two games for Felician (3-6).
Felician was the designated visiting team against Molloy, and took advantage on Diesel's first career homer, an opposite field blast to left. The Golden Falcons scored a pair in the third inning on RBI singles by Matt Kleinstein (Marlboro, N.J.) and Caccavale, but Molloy (4-2) battled back with four runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Still ahead, 7-6, after seven innings, the Golden Falcons broke the game open with a three-run eighth. Felician put its first two runners on base before J.R. Meneses (Lake Worth, Fla.) doubled home a run. Brennan Price (Middlesex, N.J.) followed with a sacrifice fly, and Caccavale drove in another run with a single.
Price (1-1) battled through four innings on the mound, allowing four runs on five hits, and was credited with his first career victory. Jesus Colon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) held off the Lions with two innings of late relief before faltering with two outs in the ninth, and Danny Naif (Jackson, N.J.) obtained the final out for his second save. The game lasted three hours, 19 minutes.
Caccavale paced Felician's 16-hit attack, going 4 for 4 with three RBI. Diesel finished 3 for 4 with four runs scored and three RBI, and Kleinstein also had three this. Junior center fielder Anthony Alberghina (Staten Island, N.Y.) was 3 for 4 for the Lions.
Later on Saturday, Stonehill (1-3), the designated visiting team, scored six times in the top of the first inning, and led, 11-2, after three frames. By the end of the fifth, Skyhawk senior left fielder Brian Campbell (Franklin, Mass.) had hit for the cycle. Campbell finished 4 for 5 with three runs and three RBI.
In a contest two hours, 59 minutes, in duration, Stonehill battered five Golden Falcon pitchers for 21 hits. Junior shortstop Steve Lee (Braintree, Mass.) was 4 for 5 and sophomore third baseman Isiah Nunez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) drove in three runs.
Meneses and Caccavale stroked two hits apiece for Felician.
