Box Score 2 LYNDHURST, N.J. – The Franklin Pierce University baseball team scored in 11 of its 16 offensive innings to earn a sweep of its non-conference doubleheader against host Felician University, 15-3 and 10-3, on Friday evening at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.
Franklin Pierce (11-0) is ranked in a tie for third in the most recent national NCAA Division II writers' poll, and is the East region's top-ranked squad.
Felican junior left fielder Ronnie Grant (Burlington, N.J./Burlington Township) went 4 for 8 on the day and scored three of his team's six runs.
Game 1 was even, 3-3, after three innings of play. The Ravens took the lead for good on Matt Burns' (Parkland, Fla./Xavier [Conn.]) RBI single in the top of the fourth, then put the game away with a seven-run fifth. FPU obtained six hits and four walks off of three Felician pitchers in the frame. Kurtis White (Nahant, Mass./St. Mary's) opened the inning's scoring with a two-run triple, and Chris Lavorgna's (North Haven, Conn./North Haven) two-run single capped the rally.
The Ravens finished with 20 hits and 10 walks, scoring in every inning but the first and the ninth. Lavorgna was 4 for 4 with four RBI and Burns 4 for 5 with three runs scored and two RBI. FPU received a triple, an inside-the-park home run, and three RBI from White. Senior right-hander Miles Sheehan (Madison, Conn./Hand) (2-0) worked six innings for the Ravens, allowing three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and three walks.
Grant was 3 for 4 with a double and Bruce Strickland (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) went 2 for 3 with a triple for Felician (4-12).
The nightcap was a scheduled seven-inning affair, and FPU snapped a 1-1 tie with a six-run fourth. The Ravens needed only three hits in their big inning, and were aided by three walks and three Felician errors. Jay Jabs (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) highlighted the rally with a two-run single.
FPU sophomore pitcher Anthony Matarazzo (Medford, Mass./Malden Catholic) limited the Golden Falcons to two runs on six hits over six innings. He struck out eight batters while walking three. Meanwhile, six Felician errors led to five unearned runs for the Ravens.
Jabs was 2 for 3 with a double and drove in three runs and White went 2 for 3 with two RBI. For Felician, Matt Kleinstein (Marlboro, N.J./Colts Neck) had a double among two hits, and Jason Polgano (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) posted a double, triple, and walk in three trips to the plate.
Felician hosts Franklin Pierce in another doubleheader on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Lyndhurst.
