Box Score 2 LYNDHURST, N.J. – Sophomore left fielder Matt Diesel (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) went 6 for 8 and scored five times and junior right fielder Andrew LaMura (Brick, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) drove in three runs in each game as Felician University won both ends of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference baseball doubleheader from the visiting University of the Sciences, 9-3 and 6-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.
The games marked the 2016 CACC openers for both schools. Felician (7-13, 2-0) was finishing a 10-game homestand.
Game 1 saw transfer pitcher Matt Blandino (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central) (1-2) earn his first victory as a Golden Falcon. The junior right-hander tossed seven scoreless innings, striking out 11 batters while walking none. He gave up five hits, and only once had a runner reach third base.
Felician took control early, leading, 7-0, after three frames. The Golden Falcons scored three times in the bottom of the first on Diesel's run-scoring groundout and a two-run, inside-the-park home run by LaMura. Felician then took advantage of four USciences errors to plate four unearned runs in the third.
Diesel, who scored three runs, and LaMura were each 3 for 4, and freshman catcher T.J. Greco (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Arlington) picked up his first career hit for Felician. Devil junior first baseman Pat Hiester (Sewell, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) was 2 for 4 with a double.
LaMura had a go-ahead two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning of the nightcap, turning a one-run deficit into a 3-2 lead. Junior lefty Drue Brooks (Spring Hill, Fla./Nature Coast Tech) teamed with three relievers to make that advantage stand up. Brooks (2-2) gave up two runs on five hits over six innings. He struck out six batters and walked two.
Felician junior third-baseman J.R. Meneses (Lake Worth, Fla./Zion Lutheran) hit a three-run inside-the-park homer in the eighth for the final margin. Diesel was 3 for 4 with a double and triple, and LaMura, Brennan Price (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) and Meneses had two hits apiece in the Golden Falcons' 14-hit attack.
Adam Reed (York, Pa./Central York) and T.J. Dezzi (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) had fifth-inning RBI singles for USciences (3-11, 0-2). Dezzi was 2 for 4 and Daniel Pineda (Wall, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) went 1 for 1 with three walks.
