Box Score 2 LYNDHURST, N.J. – Sophomore left-hander Jason Polgano (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) and junior righty Matt Blandino (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central) each pitched complete-game shutouts as the Felician University baseball team swept a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader from visiting Caldwell University, 2-0 and 1-0, on Wednesday evening at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. Game 2 was decided in 10 innings, Felician's first extra-inning affair of 2016.
The Golden Falcons (14-13, 6-0 CACC) have won a program-record nine consecutive games.
On a bitterly cold, windy afternoon, Polgano (3-0) spun a four-hitter in the day's opening game. He struck out eight batters while walking three, throwing 101 pitches. In the nightcap, Blandino (3-2) posted one of the best individual pitching performances in Felician history. He worked all 10 innings, giving up three singles and no walks. He tied a Golden Falcon record with 14 strikeouts, and allowed only one runner to progress as far as second base. Blandino tossed 104 pitches, 78 for strikes.
In Game 1, Felician dented the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning when a two-out RBI single by Andrew LaMura (Brick, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) plated Bruce Strickland (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan), who had doubled. Caldwell starter Jon Gribbin (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) then matched Polgano zero for zero until the sixth. Golden Falcon sophomore Matt Diesel (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) led off that frame with a triple, and, with LaMura at the plate, came home on a wild pitch.
Polgano worked out of two serious middle-inning jams to keep the Cougars scoreless. In the fifth, a single by Noah Clark (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) and a Will Levier (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township) double put runners on second and third with one out. Polgano came up with a strikeout before inducing an infield grounder. The next inning, Ryan Rivera walked, stole second base, continue to third on an error, but was left stranded on a grounder to third base and a strikeout.
Gribbin (2-1) scattered seven hits over seven innings with nine strikeouts and no walks. Levier finished 2 for 3 for Caldwell. (6-7, 2-2).
Game 2 saw Blandino and Cougar junior righty Chris Gehrsitz (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) locked in a briskly played pitchers' duel. Gehrsitz was replaced after nine innings, and Felician designated hitter Brennan Price (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) was hit by a pitch to lead off the 10th. Pinch runner Sean Rosatelli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) was sacrificed to second base and advanced to third on a flyout.
J.R. Meneses (Lake Worth, Fla./Zion Lutheran) was intentionally walked and stole second base. The game then ended when Ralph Caccavale's (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) pop-up down the first-base line was windblown and misplayed, with Rosatelli already having crossed home plate.
Strickland was 2 for 4 for Felician. Gehrsitz allowed five hits with five strikeouts in a no-decision. The contest was played in one hour, 54 minutes.
The only other Felician pitcher to strike out 14 batters in a game was Brian Dudzinski against Concordia (N.Y.) College on Apr. 21, 2012.
The Golden Falcons' previous record for consecutive wins was seven from Apr. 21 to May 2, 2012.
