No. 14 SNHU Baseball Uses Big Innings To Again Sweep Felician

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LYNDHURST, N.J. – Nationally-ranked Southern New Hampshire University used high-scoring fourth innings in both games to sweep its non-conference baseball doubleheader, 6-4 and 12-4, from host Felician University on Sunday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.

The Penmen (9-0) captured all four games of its weekend series against Felician. SNHU is ranked No. 14 in the most recent national NCAA Division II writers' poll and second regionally.

In Game 1, Felician junior left-hander Drue Brooks (Spring Hill, Fla./Nature Coast Tech) (1-1) pitched three no-hit innings before running into trouble in the fourth. With two men on and no one out, Mike Mastroberti (Ramsey, N.J./Saint Joseph Regional) pushed a run-scoring single up the middle and stole second base. SNHU junior center fielder Carson Helms (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) followed with a two-run double. Later in the frame, the Penmen received RBI singles from Ryan Gendron (Nashua, N.H./Nashua South) and Joshua Zbierski (Stafford Springs, Conn./East Catholic) and posted five runs on five hits.

The Golden Falcons (4-10) got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth on Matt Diesel's (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) second home run of the season. In the sixth, Brennan Price (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) drove in two runs with a single, and Matt Kleinstein (Marlboro, N.J./Colts Neck) drew a pinch-hit walk with two outs, chasing SNHU starter Ben Criscuolo (Branford, Conn./Xavier) (2-0). But sophomore right-hander Jake Walkinshaw (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) came on to retire the side.

The Penmen tacked on a run in the seventh when sophomore left fielder Sean Webster (Boston, Mass./Boston College HS) tripled and scored on a wild pitch. Walkinshaw finished the game for SNHU, tossing 3 1/3 scoreless, two-hit innings with three strikeouts to pick up his third save of 2016. He gave up a two-out triple to Josh Shimp (Pennsville, N.J./Pennsville Memorial) in the eighth, but worked out of trouble.

Manny Cruz (Wolcott, Conn./Wolcott) was 2 for 4 with a stolen base for SNHU. Diesel and Price each finished 2 for 4 and Bruce Strickland (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) scored a pair of runs for Felician.

The nightcap was scheduled for seven innings. The Penmen banged out 15 hits (eight for extra bases) and drew seven walks off of seven Felician pitchers in earning a come-from-behind victory. Trailing, 4-1, after three innings, SNHU once again enjoyed a big top of the fourth, plating six runs. Zach Goldstein (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) and Gendron each had two-run triples in the inning.

SNHU sophomore righty Justin Valdespina (Garfield, N.J./Garfield) made the runs stand up, shutting down the Golden Falcon offense for the next three stanzas. In six innings, Valedespina (2-0) gave up four runs (two earned) on six hits with nine strikeouts and no walks. The Penmen scored three times in the sixth and twice more in the seventh off of the Felician bullpen.

Price was 2 for 3 with a solo homer and Jason Polgano (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) drove in two runs for Felician. SNHU's Mastroberti was 5 for 5 with two doubles and two triples. He was thrown out at home plate in the top of the seventh attempting to obtain an inside-the-park home run for the cycle. Derek Bauer (Millis, Mass./Millis) hit a two-run homer and drove in three for the Penmen.

Felician continues an eight-game homestand on Friday with the first of two consecutive doubleheaders against Franklin Pierce University.
