Box Score GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Nine Felician University pitchers combined on a five-hitter and junior center fielder Andrew LaMura (Brick, N.J.) hit a three-run home run as the Golden Falcons earned an 8-1 non-conference baseball victory over host Adelphi University on Tuesday afternoon at Bonomo Field.
Adelphi (15-15) is ranked No. 9 in the most recent NCAA Division II East Region writers' poll.
Facing six Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contests in the next four days, Felician (17-15) dug deep into its pitching staff, allowing only starter Dean Loucka (Wood-Ridge, N.J.) to work more than one inning. Loucka (1-3) gave up an unearned run on no hits in two frames, and was credited with the victory via the NCAA's "prearrangement" rule.
The Golden Falcon bullpen followed with seven shutout innings, allowing five hits and three walks. Junior Tommy Giunta (Jackson, N.J.) (third), junior Mike Gonzalez (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) (fifth) and sophomore Danny Naif (Jackson, N.J.) (ninth) each pitched a perfect inning.
Each team scored an unearned run in the first inning before the Golden Falcons took the lead for good in the second on a run-scoring single by Ronnie Grant (Burlington, N.J.). Felician took advantage of two Adelphi errors to tack on two more unearned runs in the top of the third. The Panthers committed four miscues on the day, while Felician had none.
In the sixth, Bruce Strickland (Hazlet, N.J.) and Ralph Caccavale (Massapequa, N.Y.) drew walks ahead of LaMura, whose blast cleared the fence in right field for his second home run of the season. The Golden Falcons concluded the scoring on a sacrifice fly by freshman T.J. Greco (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) in the ninth.
Junior first baseman Robert Vani (Garden City, N.Y.) was 2 for 3 plus a walk for Adelphi.
The Golden Falcons and Panthers meet again on Apr. 20 in Garden City.
