Box Score LYNDHURST, N.J. – Five Felician University pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts, and the Golden Falcons defeated visiting Molloy College, 3-0, in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday night at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.
The NCAA Division II Baseball Committee released its first set of 2016 regional rankings earlier on Wednesday. Molloy is ranked No. 4 and Felician No. 5 in the East Region.
Sophomore shortstop Bruce Strickland (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) was 2 for 4 for Felician on Wednesday. He drove in the game's first run with a two-out double in the seventh inning. Jason Polgano (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) hit a two-run inside-the-park home run in the eighth, and Brennan Price (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) was on base three times for the Golden Falcons (25-17).
Felician has won 20 of its last 24 games.
The game began as a pitchers' duel between Molloy freshman right-hander Ryan Doerschug (Commack, N.Y./Commack) and Felician junior lefty Drue Brooks (Spring Hill, Fla./Nature Coast Tech), though neither ended up factoring in the decision. Brooks departed after five innings, allowing one hit with six strikeouts and no walks. Doerschug tossed six scoreless frames, giving up four hits and two walks while fanning two batters.
Molloy junior Anthony Galanoudis (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) picked up his team's only hit off of Brooks, a leadoff single in the third. Galanoudis stole second base with two outs and continued to third on an error, but was left stranded. Felician's best chance to score off of Doerschug came in the fifth. Strickland pushed a single through the right side with two outs, but Lion right fielder Nicholas Gonchar (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by-the-Sea) cut down J.R. Meneses (Lake Worth, Fla./Zion Lutheran) attempting to come home from second base.
Freshman Matt Downey (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) worked around a leadoff single to pitch a scoreless sixth inning for Felician, and teammate Jesus Colon (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Phelps School [Pa.]) (2-2) worked a perfect seventh. Colon ended up the winning pitcher when Felician broke through against the Lion bullpen in the bottom of the seventh.
Matt Kleinstein (Marlboro, N.J./Colts Neck) reached on an infield single with one out and Meneses was hit by a pitch. One out later, Strickland's double down the right field line brought pinch-runner Kyle Parks (Nassau, Bahamas/Rabun Gap [Ga.]) home with the go-ahead run.
After Price took the mound from his designated hitter position to pitch the top of the eighth, Polgano added some insurance with his blast to deep left field in the home half. Golden Falcon sophomore Danny Naif (Jackson, N.J/Jackson Liberty) retired the Lions in order in the ninth to earn his seventh save of the season.
Galanoudis was 2 for 3 for Molloy (26-14).
Felician travels to St. Thomas Aquinas College, the region's third-ranked team, on Thursday.
