Golden Falcons Advance To CACC Baseball Championship Round

Box Score

NEW CASTLE, Del. – Sophomore right-hander Jesus Colon (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Phelps School [Pa.]) pitched the final 3 2/3 innings in scoreless fashion, allowing top-seeded Felician University to outlast No. 6 seed Dominican (N.Y.) College, 12-4, in the elimination bracket final of the 2016 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Baseball Championship tournament, hosted by Wilmington (Del.) University on Friday afternoon at Wilson Field.

Felician (31-19) advances to the championship round on Saturday. The Golden Falcons will face Philadelphia University at 11 a.m. at Wilson Field. Should Felician win, a second game between the teams would follow to decide the CACC champion.

Felician, which set a school record for wins in a season, reaches the championship round for the third time in the last five years. The Golden Falcons won the conference title in 2014.

Colon entered Friday's contest in the top of the sixth inning with the bases loaded, one out, and the Golden Falcons clinging to a 7-4 lead. The Chargers had already scored two runs in the frame. Colon appeared to allow a run-scoring fielder's choice, but the runner from first base was called for interference at second, causing an inning-ending double play and nullifying the run.

Felician tacked on two runs in the seventh on a pinch-hit two-run single from Mike Martone (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial). Shortstop Bruce Strickland (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) made two strong defensive plays to help Colon through the eighth, and the Golden Falcons put the game away with three unearned runs in the bottom of the eight. Matt Kleinstein (Marlboro, N.J./Colts Neck) had an RBI single, and J.R. Meneses (Lake Worth, Fla./Zion Lutheran) followed with a two-run triple.

Colon worked around a pair of singles in the ninth inning for his first save as a Golden Falcon.

Junior right-hander Brennan Price (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) battled through the rainy conditions to allow two runs on two hits over five innings. Price (3-2) struck out seven batters and walked six. Matt Diesel (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa)  had a pair of doubles and Strickland lined two RBI singles for Felician. The Golden Falcons had 14 hits, including five for extra bases.

Jonel Ozuna had a double and a two-run home run for Dominican (19-29).

The game was played through varying degrees of rain and lasted three hours, 45 minutes, not including a 57-minute delay in the middle of the fifth inning.
