Box Score 2 YAPHANK, N.Y. – Felician University scored three runs on five hits in the bottom of the seventh and final inning, capped by a two-out walkoff single by senior center fielder Andrew LaMura (Brick, N.J.), to earn a come-from-behind 4-3 victory in Game 1 of its non-conference, neutral-site doubleheader with the University of New Haven on Tuesday afternoon at Baseball Heaven. New Haven rebounded to earn a 3-0 Game 2 win.
Felician (8-6) was ending a 10-day, snowstorm-induced competitive layoff. The games were make-ups from weather-related single-game postponements on Mar. 12 and 14.
New Haven (5-2) is ranked No. 7 in the most recent NCAA Division II East Region writers' poll. The Golden Falcons are the No. 4-ranked squad in the same poll.
Felician was the designated home team for Game 1. The teams entered the seventh inning tied, 1-1. The first two Chargers batters in the top of the seventh singled and advanced on a balk. New Haven senior Robert Petrillo (Branford, Conn.) followed with a two-run single, and moved to second on the throw to home plate.
Golden Falcon reliever Dan Naif (Jackson, N.J.) (2-1) escaped further damage, recording a strikeout and inducing a line-drive double play. That development proved important when the first four Golden Falcons singled in the bottom of the seventh. An infield single by J.R. Meneses (Lake Worth, Fla.) drove in the inning's first run, and a bunt hit from Ralph Caccavale (Massapequa, N.Y.) loaded the bases.
One out later, Bruce Strickland (Hazlet, N.J.) bounced a chopper to shortstop. New Haven made the force at second base, but Strickland easily beat the relay to first, allowing Ronnie Grant (Burlington, N.J.) to score and tie the game. LaMura followed and sent the first pitch into left field to plate Meneses for the victory.
Caccavale, Grant and Matt Diesel (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) had two hits apiece for the Golden Falcons. Charger leadoff man Tom Walraven (Pine Bush, N.Y.) went 3 for 3 plus a walk.
In the nightcap, Felician fell victim to a four-hit shutout by Charger junior right-hander Tim Kennedy (Ridge, N.Y.). Kennedy (2-0) struck out nine batters and walked one, needing 102 pitches to complete seven frames.
All of the game's scoring came in the bottom of the fourth, when New Haven senior third baseman Jack Zagaja (Merrick, N.Y.) reached Golden Falcon reliever Jesus Colon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) (1-1) for a three-run home run with one out. Four Felician pitchers limited the Chargers to four hits.
Felician brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh when Matt Kleinstein (Marlboro, N.J.) singled with one out and Diesel walked. But the next two Felician hitters struck out and grounded out to end the threat.
New Haven designated hitter Joe Caico (Hopedale, Mass.) was 2 for 3. Caccavale doubled in the third for Felician.
