Baseball Displays Bullpen Depth As Win Streak Hits Five

Box Score

LYNDHURST, N.J. – Seven Felician University pitchers combined on a four-hitter and struck out nine batters as the Golden Falcons earned a 2-1 non-conference baseball victory over visiting Queens (N.Y.) College on Sunday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.

Felician (13-6), which is ranked No. 4 in the most recent NCAA Division II East Region writers' poll, has won five consecutive games, all in the last three days.

Golden Falcon freshman center fielder Christian Hoplock (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth Regional) broke a 1-1 tie with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning. Hoplock's flyout to deep right-center field scored Bruce Strickland (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan), who had tripled with one out. The run made a winner of senior left-hander Tommy Giunta (Jackson, N.J./Marlboro) (1-0), the fourth Felician pitcher.

Having played four conference games in the previous two days, and with the prospect of six more next week, Felician designated Sunday as a "staff day" on the mound, limiting its pitchers to no more than two innings. The only blemish on the Golden Falcon pitching line was an unearned run surrendered by Giunta in the top of the sixth.

Three Felician pitchers, junior Tanner DeLucia (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin), graduate student Mike Gonzalez (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Pembroke Pines Charter) and junior John-Paul Codelia (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian), recorded two strikeouts in one hitless inning. Codelia worked around a two-out walk in the ninth to pick up his first collegiate save.

The effort by the Golden Falcon pitching staff negated a strong performance by Queens senior right-hander Joseph Broderick (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip). In a complete-game effort, Broderick (2-2) gave up four hits, struck out 11 batters, and walked three.

Felician reached Broderick for a run in the first inning when Hoplock singled with one out, moved up on a groundout, and scored on a single up the middle by Matt Diesel (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa). The Knights (6-7) tied the score on Nick Luciano's (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) RBI bunt single in the sixth.

Luciano finished 2 for 3 plus a walk for Queens.
