Strickland Becomes Felician's All-Time Baseball Hits King In Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HOCKESSIN, Del. – Senior third baseman Bruce Strickland (Hazlet, N.J.) set a major career Felician University offensive record in each game as the Golden Falcons swept a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference baseball doubleheader from host Goldey-Beacom College, 12-4 and 11-7, on Wednesday at Doyle Field.

The teams entered the day tied for second place in the CACC South Division. The top two teams in each division at season's end will host a first-round conference playoff game. Goldey-Beacom (11-19-1, 9-7 CACC) was charged with 12 errors for the twinbill.

Strickland began Wednesday tied for the Felician all-time hits lead with Joe Petosa (2010-14) at 225. He broke Petosa's mark with a single in the first inning of Game 1. He scored five runs on the day to move his career total to 150, one more than Mickey Zudonyi amassed from 2008-12.

Batting leadoff for the Golden Falcons, Strickland lined the first pitch of the day to center field to snap the tie with Petosa. He moved up on a bunt hit and a groundout and scored on Jason Aponte's (Loxahatchee, Fla.) sacrifice fly.

Goldey-Beacom reached Felician graduate right-hander Rob Naughton (Levittown, N.Y.) for a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead, receiving a two-out, two-run double from sophomore Justin Hill (Seaford, Del.) But the Golden Falcons struck four five runs in the fourth.

Felician (13-19, 11-5) needed just two hits in the frame to take the lead for good. After a leadoff single by Danny Healey Jr. (Brookhaven, Pa.) the Lightning erred on two consecutive sacrifice attempts to load the bases. Strickland's fielder's choice grounder tied the score, and a wild throw to third base kept three men on. L.T. Struble (Hammonton, N.J.) put the Golden Falcons ahead with a walk, and a Matt Diesel (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) sacrifice fly and a two-run single from Aponte capped the uprising.

Naughton (3-4) worked through six innings before giving way to the Felician bullpen. He allowed four runs on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts. The Golden Falcons tacked on three runs in the seventh to allow Naughton to depart with a 10-4 lead, and scored twice in the ninth for the final margin

Aponte was 3 for 5 with five RBI and Anthony Santoro (Freehold, N.J.) had a double among two hits for Felician. Strickland went 2 for 6 and scored three runs. Hill finished 2 for 3 with three RBI for the Lightning.

Felician scored eight runs on just three hits in the top of the second inning to break open Game 2, a scheduled seven-inning affair. The Lightning committed four errors and issues four walks in the stanza, during which Struble, Ron Sessa (Chester, N.J.) and Rahul Prince (Pomona, N.Y.) garnered RBI singles.

Junior right-hander Will Kazura (Saddle Brook, N.J.) was the beneficiary of the big inning for the Golden Falcons. Kazura (3-1) was lifted after four frames with a 10-4 lead, and Kyle O'Neill (West Islip, N.Y.) stabilized the game with two innings of perfect relief.

Sessa was 2 for 4, including a solo home run in the third inning, and Price went 2 for 3 with a double and scored twice for Felician. Later in the third, Strickland broke Zudonyi's record when he came around on a run-scoring single by Diesel. Right fielder Jay Smith (Zeeland, Mich.) was 2 for 4 with two runs scored for Goldey-Beacom.

Felician plays another divisional doubleheader when it hosts the Jefferson Rams on Friday at 2 p.m.
