Early Baseball Lead Evaporates In Loss To Barry

Box Score

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – An early 4-0 Felician University lead failed to hold up in the Golden Falcons' 11-5 non-conference baseball loss to host Barry University on Saturday evening at Feinbloom Field. Barry (4-3) has taken the first two games of the teams' weekend series.

Senior Danny Healey Jr. (Brookhaven, N.J.) and junior Carlos Bermudez (Miami, Fla.) picked up two hits each for Felician (0-2). Three Barry relievers combined to allow one run on three hits over the final seven innings.

The Golden Falcons jumped on top with four runs in the top of the second inning. After Jordan Folgers (Moriches, N.Y.) scored on a wild pitch, Jason Aponte (Loxahatchee, Fla.) re-ignited Felician's two-out rally with a double. Aponte came home on a Sean Downey (Elizabeth, N.J.) single. Following a single and a walk, Healey capped the uprising with a two-run single.

But over the next four frames, the Buccaneers reached Felician pitcher Michael Gutierrez (Garfield, N.J.) for five runs on just two base hits to take the lead. Joel Alvarez (Hainesport, N.J.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the second and Paul Salata (Norwalk, Conn.) hit a two-run home run in the third. Barry moved ahead in the fifth inning without a hit on two walks, two wild pitches and a balk.

Felician tied the score in the sixth. Aponte drew a one-out walk and came all the way around on a double by Bermudez. But in the home half, Barry moved ahead to stay. After the hosts loaded the bases with one out off reliever Kyle O'Neill (West Islip, N.Y.) (0-1), Chris Cabrera (Miami, Fla.) pushed a two-run single through the right side. A third run scored on the play on an outfield error.

The Buccaneers tacked on three runs in the eight off the Felician bullpen for the final margin.

Barry senior right-hander Anthony Gutierrez (Weston, Fla.) (1-1) was credited with the victory after tossing three innings of shutout, two-hit relief. Salata finished 3 for 4 with two stolen bases, and J.C. Garcia (Miami, Fla.) also homered for Barry.

Michael Gutierrez struck out seven batters in his no-decision.

The teams conclude their three-game series on Sunday at noon in Miami Shores.
