New Haven Bullpen Shuts Down Golden Falcons

Box Score

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The University of New Haven saw its bullpen allow no runs on two hits over five innings in its 6-2 non-conference baseball victory over Felician University on Saturday morning during the Northeast Challenge event on the Polo Grounds at the Ripken Experience Complex.

New Haven is ranked No. 3 and Felician No. 10 in the preseason NCAA Division II East Region writers' poll.

Senior Jason Aponte (Loxahatchee, Fla.) went 2 for 3 with a double and junior Jordan Folgers (Moriches, N.Y.) was 2 for 4 with a run batted in for Felician (0-6). New Haven junior Billy Huber (Smithtown, N.Y.) stroked two doubles among three hits.

After each team plated a single run in the first inning, the Golden Falcons, the designated visiting team, went back on top in the third. Carlos Bermudez (Miami, Fla.) drew a leadoff walk and circled to third on a Mike Martinez (Union City, N.J.) double. Felician nearly wasted the opportunity when the next two hitters struck out. But after a walk loaded the bases, each runner moved up one bag on Folgers' single to left field. A flyout left three runners stranded, but Felician was up 2-1.

The edge was short-lived. With two on and two out in the home half of the third, New Haven (1-1) took the lead for good when Felician senior left-hander Jacob Nappi (Little Silver, N.J.) (0-2) uncorked a wild pitch and followed with a balk. The Chargers extended their advantage to 5-2 following a fourth-inning two-run single by Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, Conn.).

New Haven out-hit the Golden Falcons, 10-6. Charger senior right-hander Chris Leindecker (East Lyme, Conn.) (1-0) worked four innings of relief for the victory, allowing one hit and no walks while striking out three. Nappi gave up three earned runs on seven hits over four-plus frames with five strikeouts.

Chamberlain (three RBI) and Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn.) (three runs, two stolen bases) joined Huber with three hits apiece for the Chargers. Sophomore Anthony Condito (Nutley, N.J.) doubled and drove in a run for Felician.

The Golden Falcons conclude their four-game stay in Myrtle Beach with a noon start against Molloy College on Sunday at The Ripken Experience.
