Baseball Reaches .500 With Second Sweep Of Lightning

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HOCKESSIN, Del. – The Felician University baseball team used big innings and strong starting pitching to sweep a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference baseball doubleheader from host Goldey-Beacom College, 11-2 and 11-3, on Friday afternoon at Doyle Field.

With the victories, Felician (14-14, 8-2 CACC) evened its won-lost record for the first time this season and maintained its hold on first place in the CACC South Division. The Golden Falcons, who won all four games of their CACC season series with Goldey-Beacom, have captured their last six contests.

Righthanded starters Alex Schwartz (Voorhees, N.J.) and Will Kazura (Linwood, N.J.) each pitched deep into their game for Felician. The Golden Falcons used a six-run fifth inning in Game 1 and a five-run fourth during Game 2 to break open each end of the twinbill.

Felician got off to a quick start in the opener when junior Mike Martinez (Union City, N.J.) blasted a three-run first-inning home run to left-center field, the opposite way for the left-handed hitter. The 3-0 score held until the bottom of the fourth. GBC junior Cole Collins (Laurel, Del.) reached Schwartz for a two-run double to pull the hosts to within a run.

The Golden Falcons gave Schwartz plenty of breathing room in the following stanza. Felician amassed seven base hits, including a two-run double by Sean Downey (Elizabeth, N.J.) and a two-run single from Carlos Bermudez (Miami, Fla.), and led, 9-2, at inning's end.

Schwartz (3-1) exited after seven frames with a 10-2 edge, having scattered nine hits, struck out seven batters and walked one. The Lightning picked up 11 hits for the game but left 11 runners on base.

Martinez finished 3 for 4 with four RBI. Downey was on base four times, going 2 for 2 with a pair of doubles. Six of Felician's 16 hits went for extra bases. Connor Megginson (Harbeson, Del.) had a home run among two hits for the Lightning (4-20, 3-7).

GBC junior Justin Hill (Seaford, Del.) led off the bottom of the first inning of Game 2 with a home run. Felician quickly erased the deficit with a two-run second. Gino Tortoriello (New Egypt, N.J.) lined an RBI single before the Golden Falcons scored the go-ahead run on a fielding error. Two innings later, the visitors took advantage of an error, two walks and a wild pitch to plate five runs on three hits.

A sacrifice fly by the Lightning's Jeff Gillis (Hockessin, Del.) made the score 7-2 after four frames, but Kazura and reliever Quinn Taylor (Marlton, N.J.) kept GBC off the scoreboard thereafter. Kazura (2-1) gave up two runs on six hits in six innings with two strikeouts and one walk.

Golden Falcon junior Jordan Folgers (Moriches, N.Y.) was 2 for 3 with three RBI, and senior Jason Aponte (Loxahatchee, Fla.) also collected a pair of hits. Hill picked a double to go with his home run and GBC teammate Zach Roseman (Wilmington, Del.) was also 2 for 3.

Felician hosts Dominican (N.Y.) College in a noon doubleheader on Saturday in Lyndhurst.
