Nappi, Baseball Bullpen Blank Molloy, 2-0

Box Score

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Senior left-handed pitcher Jacob Nappi (Little Silver, N.J.) combined with three relievers on a six-hit shutout to lead Felician University to a 2-0 non-conference baseball victory over Molloy College on Friday afternoon at Feinbloom Field on the campus of Barry University. Felician (3-8) defeated the Lions for the second time this season.

Nappi (1-2) spent most of the day locked in a duel with Molloy junior righty Anthony Vano (Babylon, N.Y.). Felician, the designated visiting team, broke through on the scoreboard in the fifth inning. Sophomore Sean Downey (Elizabeth, N.J.) worked Vano for a one-out walk and was forced at second base on L.T. Struble's (Hammonton, N.J.) fielder's choice grounder. Struble stole second base and scored on a single to left field by Carlos Bermudez (Miami, Fla.).

The Golden Falcons scratched across another run in the sixth. Danny Healey Jr. (Brookhaven, Pa.) led off with a hit and was sacrificed to second base. Healey moved to third on an infield hit and came home on Mike Martinez's (Union City, N.J.) groundout.

After escaping a two-on, two-out jam in the first inning, Nappi retired the Lions in order in the second. He induced double plays in the next two frames. After a perfect fifth, he allowed single runners in the sixth and seventh. In his seven innings of work, he gave up five hits, all singles, struck out four batters and walked one. Nappi threw 104 pitches, 70 for strikes.

Felician put two on base with one out in the eighth and loaded the bags with one out in the ninth but could not extend its lead. In the home half of the ninth, Molloy filled the bases with a walk and a pair of hit batsmen, but sophomore Nick Nardulli (Staten Island, N.Y.) induced a pop-up for his first collegiate save.

In defeat, Vano (0-1) gave up five hits and one walk in six innings with three strikeouts. All 13 hits in the game were singles. Junior shortstop James Messina (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) went 3 for 3 for Molloy (0-5).

Felician senior right fielder Jason Aponte (Loxahatchee, Fla.) was 2 for 3.

Felician concludes its five-game spring break trip to south Florida with a noon contest against Adelphi University on Saturday in Miami Shores.
