Baseball Perfects Art Of The Comeback In Sweeping Concordia

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Bases-loaded go-ahead hits by Anthony Condito (Nutley, N.J.) in Game 1 and Jordan Folgers (Moriches, N.Y.) in Game 2 allowed Felician University to with both ends of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference baseball doubleheader against host Concordia (N.Y.) College, 8-6 and 4-3, on Wednesday afternoon at Clipper Field.

Felician (26-18, 20-6 CACC) has won its last five games. The Golden Falcons are ranked No. 7 in the most recent NCAA Division II East Region writers' poll. They lead the CACC South Division by three games with six to play.

Felician sophomore pitcher Nick Nardulli (Staten Island, N.Y.) worked the final inning of each game and earned a save on both occasions. He ran his 2019 save total to 10, matching the Golden Falcon single-season record held by Dan Naif (2016).

Concordia (11-30, 6-20) jumped out to a 5-1 edge after three innings of the day's opening contest. Felician sliced into the deficit in the fifth when junior catcher Gino Tortoriello (New Egypt, N.J.) and senior shortstop L.T. Struble (Hammonton, N.J.) began the frame with back-to-back home runs.

With one on and two out in the sixth, Tortoriello and Struble drew walks to fill the bases and prompt a pitching change. Another base on balls went to Danny Healey Jr. (Brookhaven, Pa.) to pull the visitors within 5-4, and Condito followed with a grand slam home run over the right-field fence. It was the Golden Falcons' first four-run homer of the season.

Junior right-hander Alex Schwartz (Voorhees, N.J.) (6-1) had entered in the fifth and ended up working four scoreless innings for the victory. He gave up one hit and one walk with one strikeout. Nardulli surrendered a run on three hits in the ninth but induced a game-ending double-play ground ball.

Folgers went 3 for 5 with a double and Struble was 2 for 4 and scored twice. Condito totaled five RBI. Concordia junior third baseman Kendall Luquis (New Rochelle, N.Y.) was 2 for 4 with a double, home run, and three RBI.

Game 2 was a scheduled seven-inning contest and Clipper senior righty Jack Wall (Levittown, N.Y.) held the Felician offense mostly at bay through the first six. Wall took the hill to start the seventh with a 3-1 lead, having allowed just an unearned run on two hits.

Wall (2-3) issued a walk to Rahul Prince (Pomona, N.Y.) to start the seventh, however. A Healey single and a walk to Mike Martinez (Union City, N.J.) put three men on and ended Wall's day. Folgers greeted reliever Daniel Borysowski (Melville, N.Y.) with a double to left field, and Martinez raced all the way around from first base to give Felician the one-run advantage.

Borysowski escaped further damage, but the opening was enough for Nardulli and the Golden Falcons. Clipper junior Nick Vlahakis (Oceanside, N.Y.) singled to start the seventh and was sacrificed to second base, but consecutive ground balls to Healey at second ended the day. Concordia out-hit Felician in both games, but the Golden Falcons drew eight walks in each contest.

Sophomore Kyle O'Neill (West Islip, N.Y.) offered the visitors a solid start, giving up three earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks over five innings. Classmate Frank Campanelli (Brooklyn, N.Y.) (2-1) hurled a scoreless sixth and was credited with the victory. A bases-loaded walk by Prince in the second had plated Felician's first run.

Vlahakis was 2 for 3 and Joseph Impeduglia (Staten Island, N.Y.) drove in two runs for Concordia.

Felician has a week off before facing the University of the Sciences on Apr. 24 in a noon doubleheader in Philadelphia.
