LYNDHURST, N.J. – The Felician University baseball team was defeated by visiting East Stroudsburg University, 5-1, in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. Junior catcher Shawn Vazquez (Millville, N.J./Vineland) was 2 for 4 for Felician.

East Stroudsburg (5-3) is ranked No. 6 in the most recent NCAA Division II Atlantic Region writers' poll, and had fallen out of the national writers' top 25 earlier on Wednesday. Felician is the No. 10-ranked team in the East Region.

ESU redshirt freshman left field Ben Piripavel (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) was on base in all five plate appearances, picking up two singles and three walks, and scored twice. Piripavel also made two diving catches of Golden Falcon fly balls that helped keep the hosts off the scoreboard in the early innings.

The Warriors reached Felician sophomore left-hander Darwin Matos (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) for an unearned run in the second inning, then took control with three runs in the fifth, the third one also of the unearned variety. ESU tacked on a run in the sixth for a 5-0 edge.

East Stroudsburg used eight pitchers in the contest, none for more than two innings. Felician picked up a run without a hit in the sixth on Jaden Rivera's (Queens Village, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) sacrifice fly, but had only garnered one base hit through that frame. The Golden Falcons (2-7) threatened in the seventh and ninth, but each time left a pair of runners on base without scoring.

Felician's next two scheduled games have been postponed. The Golden Falcons are off until hosting Thomas Jefferson University for a Mar. 27 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader.
