Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University broke a 7-7 tie with seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning en route to a 14-9 non-conference baseball victory over visiting Felician University on Wednesday afternoon at The Ballpark at SCSU.
Junior right fielder Sean Downey (Elizabeth, N.J.) was 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI for Felician (3-9). Golden Falcon junior third baseman Andrew Florides (Glen Cove, N.Y.) had a double among two hits and drove in three runs.
Felician struck for three runs in the top of the eighth to wipe out a 7-4 deficit. With one out the visitors drew a pair of walks. Following a pitching change and a wild pitch, Florides delivered a two-run double and scored on a double by Garrett Allo (Monroe Township, N.J.).
Felician left Allo stranded, and the Owls' leadoff batter in the bottom of the eighth doubled but was cut down trying to steal third base. Southern Connecticut, however, saw its next nine batters reach base. After two walks and a pitching change, Jack Drewry (Wolcott, Conn.) put the hosts back on top with an RBI single. The Golden Falcons went back to their bullpen to no avail, as a hit batsman loaded the bases, and a single and a walk plated two more runs. SCSU sophomore Billy Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) broke the game open with a three-run triple. An RBI single by senior Anthony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) capped the rally.
Felician received consecutive home runs from Levis Aguila (Miramar, Fla.) and Edwin Tavarez (Garfield, N.J.) in the ninth for the final margin.
Ten Golden Falcon pitchers yielded 15 hits, nine walks and four hit batsmen in the contest. Felician used 24 total players.
SCSU leadoff man Zambito was 4 for 6 with two RBI and teammate Andrew Eng (Ridgewood, N.J.) hit a three-run home run. Senior Mike Martinez (Union City, N.J.) homered for Felician.
Felician returns to the Constitution State for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference makeup game against Post University on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Waterbury, Conn.
