Box Score 2 LYNDHURST, N.J. – The Felician University baseball team erased a late-inning 8-0 deficit to earn a 10-9 Game 2 victory and a sweep of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader from visiting Chestnut Hill College on Saturday at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex.
Junior catcher/designated hitter Shawn Vazquez (Millville, N.J./Vineland) had two hits in each game for Felician (8-10, 6-2 CACC). Chestnut Hill junior catcher Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) was 6 for 8 on the day.
Both of Saturday's games were scheduled for seven innings. Chestnut Hill began the nightcap with two unearned runs in the first inning. Griffin senior Ameir Uzzell (Levittown, Pa./Conwell Egan) capped a three-run second with an inside-the-park home run. Barletta lined a two-run single as CHC plated three more runs in the fourth, but the Griffins had two runners caught stealing during the frame, which later proved a key development.
Felician, meanwhile, had stranded a runner in scoring position in each of the first three innings before Jake Stoller (Merion Station, Pa./Lower Merion) broke the shutout with an RBI single in the fourth. That was the only blemish on the line of Griffin starting pitcher Thomas Hughes (Phoenixville, Pa./Spring-Ford), who allowed four hits, struck out five and walked four.
But when Hughes departed after five innings and 94 pitches, the Golden Falcons pounced. Felician produced eight runs in the sixth inning on five hits – four for extra bases – and used three walks, a hit batsman, and two Griffin errors. A two-run triple by Stoller and an ensuing passed ball breathed life into the hosts. When Levis Aguila (Miramar, Fla./Hialeah Gardens) drove in a run with a triple and came home on a balk, his team had pulled to within 8-6.
A walk re-started the rally. Edwin Tavarez (Garfield, N.J./Garfield) drove in a run with a double, and later scored the tying run on a throwing error. Pinch-hitter Chris Fernandez (Boca Raton, Fla./Boca Raton Community) delivered a triple to bring home Tavarez and put the Golden Falcons on top, 9-8.
Chestnut Hill extended the game on a two-out RBI single by Corbin Dunnuck (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin). But Stoller blasted the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the seventh for his second triple of the game, and Felican's fifth. The Griffins elected to intentionally walk the next two hitters. Sean Downey (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) worked the count full before sending a fly ball over the head of the drawn-in right fielder to end the game.
Barletta finished 4 for 4 with three runs scored and two RBI. For Felician, Stoller was 3 for 4 with three RBI and Aguila joined Vazquez with a pair of hits. Junior left-hander Justin Tucker (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) (3-0) got the final out in the top of the seventh and was credited with the victory.
The Golden Falcons received a solid pitching effort from starter Darwin Matos (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) (1-2) and relivers Michael Gutierrez (Garfield, N.J./Garfield) and Danny Lynch (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) and produced 11 hits to take Game 1. Matos allowed two runs, none earned, on four hits, struck out five and walked one in four innings.
Leading, 3-2, Felician broke the game open with a four-run fourth, using two-out, two-run singles from Alex Torres (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) and Downey. The Griffins scratched across two runs in the fifth to pull within 7-4, but Joe Curcio (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) came up with an RBI triple in the home half, and the Golden Falcons scored four more runs on three hits in the sixth.
Tavarez and Torres drove in three runs each for Felician. Losing pitcher Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) (0-2) had a pair of RBI for CHC (3-10, 0-6).
Felician plays a makeup doubleheader against Caldwell University on Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Caldwell, N.J.
