Box Score 2 CALDWELL, N.J. – The Felician University baseball team won for the seventh time in its last eight games after sweeping a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader, 8-3 and 14-5, from host Caldwell University on Tuesday at Kiwanis Oval. The results gave Felician victories in all three matchups with Caldwell in the teams' 2021 CACC North Division regular-season series.
Sophomore catcher/designated hitter Levis Aguila (Miramar, Fla.) produced two base hits in each game and totaled five runs scored on the day for the Golden Falcons. Felician (10-10, 8-2 CACC) boosted its winning percentage to .500 for the first time since Mar. 11, when it was 2-2. Caldwell is ranked No. 10 in the most recent NCAA Division II East Region writers' poll.
Senior right-hander Alex Schwartz (Absecon, N.J.) delivered a strong pitching start for the Golden Falcons in Game 1. Schwartz (3-1) yielded eight hits (seven singles) over seven innings with four strikeouts and no walks. The Felician offense, meanwhile, handed him a 6-0 lead after three frames.
After Andrew Florides' (Glen Cove, N.Y.) RBI single in the first, the visitors broke the game open with a five-run third. Felician began the inning by drawing five consecutive walks, included bases-loaded versions by Florides and Edwin Tavarez (Garfield, N.J.). After a pitching change and a strikeout, the Golden Falcons scored twice on Joe Curcio's (Wayne, N.J.) deep sacrifice fly, with Florides beating the throw home to score from second base. Jake Stoller (Merion Station, Pa.) capped the rally with a run-scoring hit.
Caldwell (6-6, 4-4), sliced its deficit in half by reaching Schwartz for two scores in the fourth and another in the fifth. But Stoller blasted a one-out RBI triple in the sixth and came home on an Alex Torres (Jackson, N.J.) single, completing the game's scoring.
Stoller joined Florides and Aguila with two hits each for Felician. Junior Sean Downey (Elizabeth, N.J.) was on base three times with a trio of walks, as Felician worked nine bases on balls to go along with its eight hits. Graduate right fielder Tavis Brunson (Westfield, N.J.) was 3 for 4 with an RBI triple for the Cougars.
The day's second game was scheduled for seven innings, and the Golden Falcons scored multiple runs in the middle five frames. After finding home plate twice in the second, Felician broke the game open when Tavarez blasted a three-run home run in the third. The visitors extended to a 10-0 lead after 4 ½ innings, only to see Caldwell post five unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth.
The Golden Falcon offense kept attacking, however. Shawn Vazquez (Millville, N.J.) hit a two-run homer and Robert Estrada (Jersey City, N.J.) had an RBI double in the sixth. and Lance Mumford (Brandon, Fla.) provided the final margin with a pinch-hit sacrifice fly in the seventh. Redshirt junior right-hander Michael Gutierrez (Garfield, N.J.) (3-1) worked through 4 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and four walks while striking out six, and freshman Chris Antonelli (Yonkers, N.Y.) tossed the final 2 1/3 in scoreless, one-hit fashion.
Felician amassed 12 hits, seven walks and two hit batsmen. Tavarez was 3 for 3 with three runs scored, and Aguila, Estrada and Torres each had doubles among two hits. Brunson tripled again and designated hitter Kyle Richards (Sayreville, N.J.) drove in two runs for Caldwell.
Felician was again in action on Wednesday at 3 p.m. against Bloomfield College in Newark, N.J.
