Box Score 2 LYNDHURST, N.J. – The Felician University baseball team broke a 5-5 tie with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and went on to a 10-6 Game 2 victory over visiting Bloomfield College and a sweep of the teams' Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Sunday at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. Felician also claimed Game 1, 12-2, to take all three contests in its season series with the Bears.
Junior third baseman Andrew Florides (Glen Cove, N.Y./Holy Cross HS) garnered two hits in each game for the Golden Falcons. Felician (13-10, 11-2 CACC) has won seven consecutive games and 10 of its last 11.
Felician scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning of Game 2, a scheduled seven-inning affair. Bloomfield (7-6. 7-5) reached Golden Falcon starting pitcher Michael Gutierrez (Garfield, N.J./Garfield) for single runs in the third and fifth, but Gutierrez departed after five innings and 109 pitches with the 5-2 edge. The Bears, however, evened the score on a three-run home run by junior Elvis Lopez (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) in the sixth.
In the home half, Felician put runners on second and third bases with one out. Bloomfield elected to intentionally walk pinch-hitter Mike Martinez (Union City, N.J./Bergen Catholic) and the Golden Falcons countered with another pinch-hitter, Nick Vincelli (Waretown, N.J./Spotswood). Vincelli worked a walk to drive in the go-ahead run, and Alex Torres (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) and Levis Aguila (Miramar, Fla./Hialeah Gardens) followed with bases on balls. Sean Downey's (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) two-run single, his second of the game, capped the rally.
Felician freshman Chris Antonelli (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) (1-0) pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, striking out two batters to earn his first collegiate victory. The Bears brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh in the person of Lopez, but Antonelli induced a comeback ground ball.
Gutierrez yielded three hits, struck out a season-high nine and walked seven in the no-decision. Downey was 2 for 4 with four RBI and Torres drove in three runs. Felician's 10 runs came on only six hits, as each team drew nine walks in the contest. Senior Christopher Morillo (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) was 2 for 4 with a double for the Bears.
Game 1 was scheduled for nine innings but was stopped during the bottom of the seventh on the NCAA 10-rule rule, as the Felician offense exploded for six runs in the frame. The Golden Falcons led, 6-0 after three innings before Bloomfield scratched across single runs off Felician senior righty Alex Schwartz (Abescon, N.J./Eastern Regional) (4-1) in the fourth and fifth.
Aguila and Joe Curcio (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) each had two-run doubles in the seventh, sandwiching a Shawn Vazquez (Millville, N.J./Vineland) run-scoring groundout. When Torres singled through the left side to bring home Curcio with one out, the 12-2 score ended the game.
Martinez was 3 for 4 and Vazquez finished 2 for 4 with a triple and four RBI. Schwartz worked through five innings, giving up seven hits with a season-high seven strikeouts, including the 100th of his Felician career, and three walks. Bloomfield's Kendon Strachan (West Hempstead, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) was 2 for 4 with a double.
Felician is in action again on Monday with a CACC doubleheader at Nyack College at 1 p.m.
