Nine Is Fine With Baseball, Which Ties Record Win Streak

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

JERSEY CITY, N.J.  – The Felician University baseball team tied a program record by winning its ninth consecutive game when it twice defeated host Nyack College, 21-10 and 18-4, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Monday at the Gerrity Athletic Complex.

Sophomore first baseman Edwin Tavarez (Garfield, N.J.) was 5 for 6, including four extra-base hits, and drove in nine runs on the day for Felician (15-10, 13-2 CACC). Golden Falcon senior left fielder Mike Martinez (Union City, N.J.) was 5 for 8. Junior left fielder Sam Abreu (Belleville, N.J.) went 7 for 8 for Nyack.

Both of Monday's games were scheduled for seven innings. Each Felician victory was jumpstarted by early seven-run offensive outbursts. In Game 1, a three-run triple by Tavarez and the first collegiate home run from Jake Stoller (Merion Station, Pa.), a three-run shot, capped a seven-spot for the visitors in the top of the first. After not scoring in the second, Felician posted multiple runs in each of the last five frames.

Felician tied a school record by hitting five home runs. With two-run shots in the fourth and fifth, Tavarez matched another Felician standard with seven RBI. Mike Rooth (2006) and Evan Mancini (2009) are the only other Golden Falcons to accomplish that feat. Tavarez left the game for a defensive replacement in the bottom of the fifth; his 11 total bases in the contest were one shy of the Felician record held by Chris Flynn. Martinez and Chris Fernandez (Boca Raton, Fla.) also homered for the Golden Falcons.

Felician graduate right-hander Dwayne Marshall (Piscataway, N.J.) (1-3) departed after five frames with a 14-2 lead. He gave up one earned run on seven hits, struck out six batters and walked one. Martinez finished 3 for 4, and both Fernandez and Lance Mumford (Brandon, Fla.) went 2 for 2 off the Golden Falcon bench. Eric Bittinger (Secaucus, N.J.) was 3 for 3, including a grand slam home run, and Larry Rodriguez (Labelle, Fla.) also homered for the Warriors (0-15, 0-15). Abreu went 4 for 4 with a triple and three runs scored.

Felician scored 20 or more runs for the first time since a 25-5 home victory over Concordia (N.Y.) College on May 1, 2018. In that contest, the Golden Falcons set a school record which still stands with 31 hits.

The Golden Falcons got off to a hot start again in the nightcap with seven second-inning runs, highlighted by Martinez's three-run double. Sophomore lefty Darwin Matos (Clifton, N.J.) (2-2) was the beneficiary on the mound. Matos gave up just two hits and a walk in five scoreless innings, while striking out a season-high nine batters. He exited with his team on top, 14-0.

Felician's Sean Downey (Elizabeth, N.J.) went 3 for 5 with a double, home run, four runs scored and two RBI. Levis Aguila (Miramar, Fla.) joined Martinez with three runs batted in. Nyack's Matthew Ing (Toronto, Ontario) drove in three runs and Abreu finished 3 for 4 with two doubles.

The 39 runs are believed to be the most by the Golden Falcons in a doubleheader since they scored 43 versus Lincoln (Pa.) University on March 21, 2009. The program record is 44 against the University of the Sciences on April 27, 2001. Felician also won nine consecutive games during the 2016, 2018, and 2019 seasons.

Felician faces USciences in a CACC doubleheader on Saturday at noon in Philadelphia.
