Box Score 2 BRANCHBURG, N.J. – Junior Andrew Florides (Glen Cove, N.Y./Holy Cross HS) hit a two-out eighth-inning walkoff single to lead Felician University to a 4-3 victory over visiting Goldey-Beacom College in Game 1 of the teams' Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference baseball doubleheader on Monday at Raritan Valley Community College. Goldey-Beacom bounced back to win Game 2, 13-3.
Goldey-Beacom (18-6, 17-6 CACC) is ranked No. 5 in the most recent NCAA Division II East Region writers' poll. The Lightning and Golden Falcons are in first place in the CACC South and North Divisions, respectively.
Both games on Monday were scheduled for seven innings, but neither concluded in that many frames. The opener was tied, 2-2, after seven, putting the international tiebreaker into effect. In the top of the eighth, an error and a walk joined with the placed runner to load the bases with no one out. A Garrett Musey (Millville, N.J./Millville) sacrifice fly gave GBC the lead, and a bunt single refilled the bags. But Felician reliever Bryan Ariza (Boynton Beach, Fla./Somerset Academy Canyons) (1-0) recorded a strikeout and groundout to preserve the one-run deficit.
In the home half, Levis Aguila (Miramar, Fla./Hialeah Gardens) tied the game with a one-out double, and the Lightning elected to intentionally walk Felician RBI leader Edwin Tavarez (Garfield, N.J./Garfield). Aguila advanced to third on a flyout before Florides dropped a single into right field to end the game.
Golden Falcon starting pitcher Dwayne Marshall (Piscataway, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) struck out 10 batters, a team season high, in a no-decision. In six innings, Marshall gave up three hits and two walks. His GBC counterpart, junior right-hander Jake Heskett (Derwood, Md./St. John's College HS) struck out seven and walked none over seven innings, allowing 10 hits. Both starters were charged with two earned runs.
All nine Felician offensive starters had at least one base hit. Florides was 2 for 4 with a triple and two RBI, and Mike Martinez (Union City, N.J./Bergen Catholic) and Shawn Vazquez (Millville, N.J./Vineland) also collected two hits each. Mason Maxwell (Newfield, N.J./Delsea) had a triple and an RBI for GBC.
Game 2 was called after five innings due to rain and darkness. That was enough time, however, for the Lightning to amass 12 hits and draw five walks off six Felician pitchers. Goldey-Beacom led, 7-1, after four innings, then put the game away with a six-run fifth.
GBC pitcher Trevor Jump (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant) went the distance on a four-hitter to improve to 5-0 on the season. Teammates Maxwell and Cole Collins (Laurel, Del./Sussex Tech) each hit two-run home runs and freshman Kyle Walker (Wilmington, Del./Conrad) was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBI. Freshman Alex Torres (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) had a double and an RBI and Tavarez a run-scoring single for Felician (17-12, 15-4)
The Golden Falcons conclude the regular season with a make-up doubleheader at the University of the Sciences on Wednesday at noon in Philadelphia.
