Box Score CALDWELL, N.J. – Freshmen Luis De La Cruz (Jersey City, N.J.) and Andy Antonio (Jersey City, N.J.) hit home runs and classmate Dylan Morrill (Teaneck, N.J.) allowed two runs over 6 1/3 innings to help lead the Felician University baseball team to an 8-5 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over host Caldwell University on Wednesday afternoon at Kiwanis Oval.
Felician junior first baseman Edwin Tavarez (Garfield, N.J.) was 3 for 5 with two doubles and two runs batted in. Junior shortstop Elias Negron (Virginia Beach, Va.) went 3 for 4 and drove in two runs for Caldwell (6-10, 1-4 CACC).
Felician (8-12, 3-1) opened the scoring on a solo home run by De La Cruz in the top of the first inning. Negron drove in runs in the second on a groudout and with an RBI single in the fourth to put Caldwell ahead, 2-1. But the Golden Falcons took the lead for good on a two-run roundtripper by Antonio with one out in the fifth.
Morrill (4-2) made the lead stand up, allowing seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks, and received help from two fellow freshman out of the bullpen. Left-hander Mekhi Sanchez (Vineland, N.J.) entered to work out of a two-on, one-out jam in the seventh. After Felician had stretched its lead to 8-2, the Cougars rallied for three runs in the ninth before righty Mike Caldon (Matawan, N.J.) closed things out.
Caldwell out-hit the Golden Falcons, 12-9, but committed five errors while Felician played spotless defense. Kyle Richards (Sayreville, N.J.) had a triple among two hits for the Cougars.
The teams meet again in a CACC doubleheader on Sunday hosted by Felician in Palisades Park, N.J. Before that, the Golden Falcons face Goldey-Beacom college in a noon league twinbill on Saturday in Hockessin, Del.
