Baseball Falls To Griffins, 2-1 In 8; Game 2 Halted

Box Score

NORTH WALES, Pa.  – The Felician University baseball team was defeated, 2-1, by host Chestnut Hill College on Thursday afternoon at Hostelley Field. The game was decided in the eighth inning of contest slated to last seven frames. Game 2 of the teams' scheduled Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader was halted by inclement weather and unplayable field conditions before becoming official.

Felician (14-15, 8-4 CACC) entered the day riding a six-game winning streak during which it had scored 95 runs. But the Golden Falcon offense was held in check by Chestnut Hill senior right-handed pitcher Andrew Dietz (Warrington, Pa.), who went the distance on a six-hitter. Dietz (6-1) struck out four Golden Falcons and walked three.

Dietz, who doubled as the Griffins' designated hitter, also scored the game's first run. He led off the second inning with a double, was sacrificed to third base, and scored on a groundout by Patrick Meehan (Oreland, Pa.). Felician evened the score the next half-inning when Colby Johnson (Frederick, Md.) lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home Dauri Genao (West New York, N.J.), who had started the inning with a single.

From that point, Golden Falcon junior lefty Wilfrido Valenzuela (Paterson, N.J.) matched Dietz zero for zero. Valenzuela worked around a leadoff single in the sixth, only to see his offense strand three runners in the top of the seventh. Freshman Mike Caldon (Matawan, N.J.) relieved Valenzuela with two men on and one out in the home half of the seventh and induced an inning-ending double play to force extra innings.

Dietz set down Felician in order in the eighth. Caldon (0-2) retired the first two hitters in the bottom end before a fly ball to center field by Sam Barletta (Royersford, Pa.) caromed off an outstretched glove and was scored a double. A pinch-hit single by CHC freshman Justin Geiger (Phoenixville, Pa.) ended the game.

Felician left eight men on base and had another erased on the basepaths. Genao and junior Levis Aguila (Miramar, Fla.) had two hits each. Valenzuela allowed five hits with five strikeouts and two walks in a no-decision. Barletta finished 2 for 4 for the Griffins.

Game 2 was halted in the middle of the fourth inning following two weather delays. Felician was ahead, 6-0, and the game was three outs away from becoming official. By NCAA and CACC rules, the game will need to be made up from the beginning and no statistics count.

The Golden Falcons host Wilmington (Del.) University on Friday at 1 p.m. in a doubleheader in Palisades Park, N.J.
