De La Cruz, Genao Homer Twice But Baseball Swept By Lightning

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HOCKESSIN, Del.  – Felician University freshman Luis De La Cruz (Jersey City, N.J.) hit a two-run home run in the first inning of each game, but the Golden Falcons lost both ends of their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference baseball doubleheader to host Goldey-Beacom College, 5-4 and 7-3, on Saturday afternoon at Doyle Field.

Both of Saturday's contests were scheduled seven-inning affairs by CACC rule. The Golden Falcons and Lightning combined for eight home runs on the day, including six during Game 1.

Felician (8-14, 3-3 CACC) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the opener. Levis Aguila (Miramar, Fla.) drew a leadoff walk and De La Cruz hooked a fly ball just inside the left field foul pole. Two outs later, sophomore Dauri Genao (West New York, N.J.) hit a solo shot to nearly the same place.

Goldey-Beacom plated two runs on three hits in the second, then tied the game on a Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, Del.) longball in the third. Genao hit his second roundtripper of the game in the fourth to put the visitors back on top, but the Lightning took the lead for good in the home half of the fourth on back-to-back home runs by Marlon Lindsey (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) and Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, N.J.).

GBC starter Jake Heskett (Derwood, Md.) (2-3) set down Felician in order in the fifth, and Trevor Jump (Wilmington, Del.) got the final six outs in scoreless fashion for his first save. The duo limited the Golden Falcons to four hits and two walks. Johnson was 2 for 2 with a double and homer and drove in a pair of runs.

De La Cruz got Felician off to another fast start in the nightcap, but Goldey-Beacom took the lead for good with three runs in the third inning, using a two-run Awtry homer and a dropped fly ball, then took control with three more runs on three hits, a walk and another Felician error in the fourth.

Right-hander Mitch Guerrieri (Greentown, Pa.) (4-4) earned the victory for the Lightning, yielding two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and no walks in five frames. Leadoff man Mason Maxwell (Newfield, N.J.) was 4 for 4 with a double and three runs scored and Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, Pa.) went 3 for 3 for the Lightning. Edwin Tavarez (Garfield, N.J.) and Michael Kuver (Manalapan, N.J.) each had a double among two hits for the Golden Falcons.
