Eagles Put Baseball's Regular-Season Title Streak In Jeopardy

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WATERBURY, Conn.  – The Felician University baseball team was held scoreless on nine hits in losing both ends of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader to host Post University, 10-0 and 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. Junior first baseman Edwin Tavarez (Garfield, N.J./Garfield) was 3 for 6 on the day for Felician (18-19, 11-8 CACC).

Sunday's results left Post (19-23, 14-6) 2 ½ games ahead of the Golden Falcons for first place in the CACC North Division. Felician has six league games remaining, while the Eagles have five. Felician has captured a CACC regular-season title following each of the last five completed seasons – the conference as a whole in 2016 and 2017 prior to divisional play, the South Division in 2018 and 2019, and the North Division in 2021.

Post broke through in Game 1 with two runs in the third inning before breaking the game open with four runs in the fifth.  When the Eagles added four runs after two were out in the seventh, the game ended on the CACC's 10-run rule.

Eagle sophomore Joe Christiana (Carmel, N.Y.) (4-0) was credited with the shutout. The right-hander tossed all seven innings, allowing five hits and two walks with five strikeouts. The Golden Falcons advanced a runner to third base on two occasions, the second and sixth innings, but Christiana came up with a strikeout each time. In all, Felician left seven men on base and had another erased on a line drive double play.

Tavarez had a double and Jake Stoller (Merion Station, Pa.) was on base twice for Felician. Post's Jimmy Brennan (Newton, N.J.) had a pair of doubles and Nate Miller (Morris Plains, N.J.) was on base four times.

A solo home run by Miller was the only blemish on the line of Felician left-hander Darwin Matos (Clifton, N.J.) during the nightcap. In four innings of relief, Matos (2-2) gave up three hits, struck out four batters and walked none during the hard-luck loss.

Three Post pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout. Starter Dan Raglievich (Dumont, N.J.) fanned eight batters, walked two and yielded three hits in a no-decision. Jacob Tamburrino (Ansonia, Conn.) (4-2) worked two innings for the victory and Matt Goehrig (Clifton, N.J.) pitched a perfect seventh for his second save.

Tavarez went 2 for 3 and Stoller and Shawn Vazquez (Millville, N.J.) had the other Felician safeties. The Golden Falcons left the bases loaded in the first inning, then never had another runner reach second base. Robert Olah (Trumbull, Conn.) provided an insurance run for the Eagles with a sixth inning RBI double.

Felician plays a seven-inning conference makeup game against Chestnut Hill College on Monday at 6 p.m. in North Wales, Pa.
