Box Score 2 PALISADES PARK, N.J. – The Felician University baseball team took advantage of its offensive opportunities to earn two Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victories, 15-5 and 11-5, over visiting Caldwell University on Monday at Overpeck County Park. The doubleheader was a makeup from a rainout the previous day.
Felician leadoff man Dauri Genao (West New York, N.J./Memorial) went 3 for 9 and scored five runs on the day. The victory gained Felician a sweep of its three-game CACC season series with the Cougars.
During Game 1, the Golden Falcons (10-14, 5-3 CACC) took advantage of six Cougar errors to plate eight unearned runs. Felician erased an early 3-1 deficit by scoring eight runs, on only three hits, in the bottom of the third inning. A two-run single by senior Andrew Florides (Glen Cove, N.Y./Holy Cross) highlighted the rally.
The Golden Falcons strung together eight consecutive two-out baserunners to tack on six more runs in the fourth. Michael Kuver (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) lined an RBI triple and Genao had a two-run triple during the rally. Caldwell received a two-run double from Ethan Coursey (Atlantic City, N.J./Holy Spirit) in the seventh, but when he was left stranded, the game ended on the CACC's 10-run rule.
Senior pitcher Darwin Matos (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) (2-1) was the beneficiary of the outburst. The left-hander worked through five innings, giving up three runs on seven hits. He struck out eight batters and walked five. Florides was 2 for 4 with three RBI and Genao and Edwin Tavarez (Garfield, N.J./Garfield) also had two hits each for Felician. Liam Lombardi (Stony Point, N.Y./North Rockland) and Jalen March (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) collected two hits apiece for Caldwell during a game that lasted three hours, five minutes.
Felician drew 12 walks and was hit by two pitches during the nightcap. Felician took the lead for good, 5-3, following a grand slam home run by junior Chris Fernandez (Boca Raton, Fla./Boca Raton Community) in the second inning.
After a run-scoring hit by Genao in the third, Caldwell (6-16, 1-9) pulled to within 6-5 in the fourth on RBI singles by Lombardi and Kyle Richards (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial). Golden Falcons senior right-hander Michael Gutierrez (Garfield, N.J./Garfield) escaped further trouble, and his offense broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. After a sacrifice fly by Colby Johnson (Frederick, Md./Oakdale) and a bases-loaded walk to Hakim Salaam (Vineland, N.J./Archbishop Ryan [Pa.]), a two-out error allowed two more runs to score.
Gutierrez (1-3) yielded six hits and four earned runs in six innings. He walked three batters while striking out eight, extending his all-time Felician strikeout record to 282. Fernandez added a double to his big blow, and Kuver went 2 for 3 and scored twice.
Felician is back in Palisades Park on Tuesday for a 2 p.m. CACC contest against Nyack College.
