Felician Baseball Takes Down #9 SNHU in Myrtle Beach

Box Score

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Felician Baseball continues its 2023 campaign with its second trip of the season in Myrtle Beach, S.C. In the first game of the week, the Golden Falcons faced No. 9 Southern New Hampshire University Penmen to pick up its second win, 9-7, Thursday night.

Current Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week, Haiden Walters (Coral Springs, FL) led off for the green-and-gold and went 4-5 at the plate earning himself three runs and three RBI's. Walters started the contest with a single to right field to eventually find himself on second after a first inning out. Anthony Lamar (Freeport, NY) batted a single of his own into left field, to send Walters home for the first Golden Falcon run. In the bottom of the first, SNHU also recorded a run, but Felician dominated the plate for a huge third inning.

Felician's hefty eight run inning propelled them to the 9-7 win over the nationally ranked squad. Walters once again led the charge starting off with a single while Jack Scrivanic (Tinton Falls, NJ) and Dauri Genao (West New York, NJ) reached first on a walk. With bases loaded and no outs, Edwin Tavarez (Garfield, NJ) shifted each baserunner on an error to have Walters reach home for a second time, 2-1. Immediately after, Genao's aggressive base running allowed him to swiftly come home on a wild pitch, 3-1.

After two more walks, the Golden Falcons found themselves leading the Penmen 5-1 with one out. SNHU forced a second out and it was back to the top of the order as Walters slammed a double into left field for a three RBI at bat. Another fielding error and wildpitch allowed the freshman to come home for the ninth run.

The Penmen attempted to snap the 8-run deficit as they posted a three-run homerun in the bottom of the third and another 2 run home-run in the bottom of the fourth to only be down 9-6. Eventually, the ranked squad posted another run to have the final score set at 9-7 for the rest of the game.

All three Felician pitchers appeared in three innings. Starting pitcher, Wilfrido Valenzuela (Paterson, NJ), gave up 7 hits, 6 runs, 3 strikeouts and 2 walks. To relieve him, Derek Vonhorn (Hillsborough, NJ) came in to clinch the win in three innings pitched with 3 walks, 3 strikeouts, 2 hits and one run. Ralph Gambino (Freehold, NJ) recorded the save as he struck out 6 and gave off 2 runs.

The Golden Falcons improve to 2-3 overall and will be back in action Friday afternoon to face Mercy College at noon.
