Box Score WATERBURY, CT – Felician baseball traveled to Waterbury, CT for the next round of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference 2023 Baseball Playoffs Thursday afternoon. The green-and-gold faced the Top Seed in the South Division, Wilmington (Del.) University for the second game of the afternoon to topple its opposers, 8-2.
The championship week event is a double elimination set up. On Thursday, the CACC scheduled two games, a morning and afternoon, and the loser of each contest will play a second game for an elimination round at 5:00pm. As the Golden Falcons advanced to Friday, they are set to play S#2 Seed Goldey-Beacom College with the first pitch at 11:00 a.m.
The green-and-gold clinched its first two runs of the afternoon on an Anthony Lamar (Freeport, NY) and Jose David Medrano (North Bergen, NJ) RBI singles. The Wildcats would score a run in the bottom of the fourth to chip away at the Felician lead, but come the sixth inning, the Golden Falcons recorded three to post a 5-1 lead over the number one seed.
With the score displaying 5-2, Cole Porter (River Vale, NJ) extended the lead after a triple, his first of the season, to send home Thomas Kendrick (Jackson, NJ) for another green-and-gold run. Edwin Tavarez (Garfield, NJ) paced the squad, going 3-5 at the plate with two RBIs and three doubles, which ties a Felician record for doubles in a game. His final double of the contest was to record the 7th run of the afternoon, 7-2.
By the end of the ninth, the Golden Falcons strides into Friday to face the Lightening for an 11:00am contest. The loser of the event will play the winner of the elimination game that was set for 5:00pm today between the top seeds, N#1 Post University and Wilmington (Del.)
Starting pitcher Wilfrido Valenzuela (Paterson, NJ) captured his 6th win of the season with 7.0 IP with three strikeouts and to only surrender the two Wildcat runs. Lamar went 4-5 with one run and an RBI and Kendrick went 2-3 with two runs.
