College rode a five-run first inning to a 9-3 Game 2 victory and a sweep of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader over host Felician College on Tuesday afternoon at Matera Field. Dominican is the two-time defending CACC champion. Felician sophomore Carissa Trujillo (Fresno, CA/Edison) was 3 for 6 on the day.
The Chargers (10-8, 4-0 CACC) reached Felician right-hander Tori Bradburn (Ridge, MD/Great Mills) (0-5) for five hits and two walks in the top of the first inning of the nightcap. Victoria LaPorte (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) capped the rally with a two-run single.
The Golden Falcons, who trailed by as many as seven runs, closed to within 7-3 on a two-run single by Kelsi Ludwigsen (Havre de Grace, MD/Harford Tech) in the second and Bradburn's run-scoring hit in the fourth, but Dominican put the game away with two runs in the fifth. Julie Plante (Swansea, MA/Joseph Case) blasted an RBI triple and later scored on a sacrifice fly.
Grace Keller (Hoboken, NJ/Holy Family Academy) went 2 for 3 with a triple and scored twice for Felician and Ludwigsen also had two hits. Macy Chase (Sacramento, CA/Bradshaw Christian) pitched 5 1/3 innings of relief, allowing two runs on three hits with three strikeouts. Pitcher Katrina Pistilli (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) (3-4) struck out eight batters in a complete game victory for Dominican and Delaney Childers (Johnstown, OH/Johnstown-Monroe) had a double and triple and drove in two runs.
Game 1 featured a pitchers' duel between Childers and Felician right-hander Kristen Tenwolde (Ramona, CA/Ramona), with Childers's two-hit shutout coming out on top. Childers (7-4) faced one batter over the minimum, striking out nine (including five in a row in the early innings) and walking none.
Tenwolde fanned a season-high eight batters and walked three in a five-hit effort. Only one of the Charger runs was earned. Trujillo had both hits for the Golden Falcons, including a seventh-inning double.
Dominican scored in the first inning on a bases-loaded walk to Ashley Corrao (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) after an error had extended the frame. Brielle Kerscher (Staten Island, NY/Moore Catholic) had an RBI single in the fourth, and following two Felician miscues, Shelby Wassman (Loudoun, VA/Loudoun Valley) closed the scoring with a fifth-inning sacrifice fly.
Felician completes an eight-game homestand with a non-conference twinbill on Thursday against Merrimack College at 2:30 p.m.
