Long, Cold Day Goes Goldey-Beacom's Way

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WILMINGTON, Del. – On a bitterly cold Sunday afternoon, Goldey-Beacom College earned a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball victories from visiting Felician College, 8-5 and 8-7, at the Jackson Athletic Complex. Both teams were playing their first CACC contests of the 2013 season.

A doubleheader that lasted four hours, 20 minutes, saw the Lightning and Golden Falcons combine for 44 base hits and 21 walks. Felician sophomore center fielder Zharde Sellona (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) went 4 for 6 to lead a 23-hit attack for the visitors on the day.

Goldey-Beacom (5-7, 2-0 CACC) earned both wins in come-from-behind fashion to extend its winning streak to four games. In Game 1, Felician scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead, only to see the Lightning answer with three in the bottom of the frame. A two-run single by GBC catcher Alivia Schoff (Colora, Md.) off of Felician starter Kristen Tenwolde (Ramona, Calif.) (2-6) gave the hosts the lead for good.

The Golden Falcons (4-12, 0-2) pulled to within a 6-5 deficit on a squeeze bunt by Joelle Erickson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) in the sixth. But Felician left the bases loaded without scoring again, and GBC tacked on two runs against the Felician bullpen in the home half of the sixth to secure the victory.

Lightning pitcher Ashley Antosh (Honey Brook, Pa.) turned in a complete-game effort, yielding four earned runs on 12 hits with five strikeouts. GBC sophomore first-baseman Samantha Alonzo (Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) was 3 for 3 with a double, triple, two runs scored and three runs batted in. Sellona went 3 for 3 and Aimee Lopez (Riverbank, Calif.) had a two-run triple for Felician. Tenwolde was charged with six runs on eight hits in five innings.

With Game 2 tied, 7-7, after 6 ½ frames, Goldey-Beacom junior third-baseman Ashley Zaccaria (Gloucester City, N.J.) drew a walk to start the bottom of the seventh off of Golden Falcon reliever Tori Bradburn (Ridge, Md.) (1-3). An infield single and a walk loaded the bases, and Bradburn's first pitch to Michelle Foster (West Berlin, N.J.) short-hopped catcher Kelsi Ludwigsen (Havre de Grace, Md.). Zaccaria made an aggressive dash for the plate, and Ludwigsen was unable to secure possession of the ball in her swipe tag attempt as the winning run scored.

The Lightning came back from a 6-2 deficit by tallying five runs in the home half of the sixth. After the hosts loaded the bases with one out off of Felician starter Macy Chase (Sacramento, Calif.), Roni Peters (Leonardtown, Md.) drew a run-scoring walk. Foster's two-run single brought GBC within 6-5, and Madison Newhouser (Ashland, Pa.) tied the score with a bunt hit. Two batters later, Taylor Ewing's (Hurlock, Md.) fielder's choice grounder plated the go-ahead run.

Felician drew even in the seventh when Erickson's infield single drove in Katie Heflin (Escalon, Calif.). But the Golden Falcons stranded runners on first and third, and the Lightning took the victory in the bottom half.

Antosh (4-3) pitched two innings of relief for her second victory of the day, and Foster was 3 for 4 to pace GBC. Heflin was 3 for 4 and Lopez went 2 for 4 with a home run and three runs scored for Felician.
