Late Game Magic Allows Softball To Sweep Post

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WATERBURY, Conn. – Senior pitcher Kristen Tenwolde (Ramona, Calif.) allowed one earned run and no walks in 13 innings as Felician College earned two victories in its final at-bat, sweeping a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader from host Post University, 6-2 and 5-4, on Tuesday afternoon at LaMoy Field. Junior catcher Kelsi Ludwigsen (Havre de Grace, Md.) went 5 for 9 with three runs batted in on the day for Felician (7-13, 3-3 CACC).

In Game 1, Felician designated player Tori Bradburn (Ridge, Md.), who had drawn a leadoff walk, scored on a two-out Post error in the top of the second inning. The Golden Falcons carried that slim 1-0 edge into the bottom of the seventh, with Tenwolde working on a five-hit shutout.

Eagle junior second-baseman Rebecca Erb (Yardley, Pa.), however, led off with a looper into short-left field that ticked off the glove of lunging Felician shortstop Aimee Lopez (Riverbank, Calif.) for a double. Following a sacrifice, a single by Stephanie Mendez (White Plains, N.Y.) plated Erb with the tying run. Tenwolde escaped further trouble and the teams entered extra innings.

After each team failed to score in the eighth, CACC rules called for the international tiebreaker to be enacted in the ninth. Following a leadoff sacrifice, the Golden Falcons exploded to put their next six batters on base, producing five runs. Lopez singled home Alyssa Banca (East Rutherford, N.J.) with the go-ahead tally, and Halei Van Dyke (West Milford, N.J.) followed with an RBI triple. Three batters and a pitching change later, Ludwigsen and Bradburn produced run-scoring singles to cap the rally.

Tenwolde allowed the placed runner to score in the bottom of the ninth on another RBI single by Mendez, but ended the game one batter later with her second strikeout. She gave up nine hits (eight singles) over nine innings. Eagle starting pitcher Ashley Cummings (Stafford, Va.) yielded three earned runs on 10 hits in 8 1/3 stanzas, struck out seven Golden Falcons, and walked four. Ludwigsen had three hits for Felician, as did Erb for the Eagles (6-12, 1-5)

A two-run home run by Post junior Stephanie DeMartino (Staten Island, N.Y.) gave the hosts a 4-2 edge after four innings of Game 2. Felician cut its deficit in half on a sixth-inning sacrifice fly by Natalie Quintanilla (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.), then took the lead by putting its first four batters on base in the seventh.

Lopez led off with a walk, and Van Dyke followed with a single to right field. On the throw to third base, VanKelsi Ludwigsen Dyke hustled into second and barely beat the relay throw. Ciera Clark (Granite Bay, Calif.) singled home Lopez to tie the game at 4-4, and Taylor Parker (Surrey, British Columbia) came up with a base hit to left field to put the Golden Falcons on top.

Tenwolde (4-7), on for her fourth inning of relief work, quickly retired the first two hitters in the home half of the seventh before Erb doubled to right center. DeMartino then hit a grounder deep into the shortstop hole. She beat Lopez's throw to first for a base hit, but Golden Falcon first-sacker Clark caught the ball and ran directly at Erb, who had broken for home plate, then stopped. Clark held the ball while pursuing Erb all the way across the diamond, then finally flipped to third-baseman Parker, who tagged Erb to complete the Golden Falcon sweep.

Eagle senior right-hander Johanna Rice (Glendale, N.Y.) (3-5) hurled a complete game in defeat, allowing five runs on nine hits with three strikeouts in seven innings. Tenwolde earned her second win of the day with five hits allowed and two punchouts in four frames, after escaping a two-on, none-out jam in the fourth.

Bradburn launched a two-run homer in the second to open the game's scoring. Erb had three more hits and went 6 for 8 on the day for the hosts.
