Softball Drops Home Doubleheader To Caldwell

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LYNDHURST, N.J. – A two-out, bases-loaded line drive off the bat of Felician College pinch-hitter Kristen Tenwolde (Ramona, Calif./Ramona) in the bottom of the seventh inning was gloved by Caldwell College sophomore third-baseman Kristen Knorr (Monroeville, N.J./Delsea), preserving Caldwell's 5-2 Game 2 victory and its sweep of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader over the Golden Falcons on Wednesday afternoon at Matera Field. The Cougars (13-4, 4-0 CACC) had four extra-base hits in winning Game 1, 9-6.

In the nightcap, Caldwell freshman right-handed pitcher Amber Padilla (Chino, Calif./Pomona Catholic) (4-1) went the distance on a three-hitter. She struck out four batters and walked two. Padilla carried a 5-1 lead into the seventh before running into trouble.

With one out, a Kelsi Ludwigsen (Havre de Grace, Md./Harford Tech) double drove in Taylor Parker (Surrey, British Columbia/Semiahmoo), who had been hit by a pitch. Two walks sandwiched a groundout and loaded the bases, and the Golden Falcons turned to Tenwolde with the tying runs on base. She attacked Padilla's first offering, but was still in the batter's box when Knorr made the game-ending catch.

Leading 2-1 after four innings, the Cougars broke the game open with a three-run top of the fifth. Briana Gaspich (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) led off with a home run, and Nicole Velardi (Belleville, N.J./Belleville) delivered a two-out, two-run triple later in the frame.

Junior Tori Bradburn (Ridge, Md./Great Mills) (1-4) pitched a complete game for Felician (7-15, 3-5), yielding two earned runs on six hits. Parker had a fourth-inning RBI double, while Knorr was 2 for 3 for Caldwell.

The Golden Falcons had trouble containing Caldwell sophomore catcher Alyssa Calderon (Fontana, Calif./Etiwanda) in the day's first game. After flying out in her first at-bat, Calderon finished the game with an RBI double, a two-run home run, and a three-run shot to go 3 for 4 with six RBI.

Trailing, 9-4, in the bottom of the seventh against the Cougar bullpen, Felician managed to send the potential tying run to the plate. After two were out, the Golden Falcons put four consecutive runners on base, receiving run-scoring singles from Ludwigsen and Bradburn, before finally being retired.

Felician received a 6 for 10 performance from the 7-8-9 spots in its line-up. Sophomore Natalie Quintanilla (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Immaculate Conception) had a double among a career-high three hits, and Zharde Sellona (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Aliso Niguel) was 2 for 4 and scored twice. Caldwell senior Kourtney Wilson (Islip, N.Y.) (7-1) worked six innings to earn the victory in the circle, and teammates Gaspich and Caitlin McCready (Jupiter, Fla./Dwyer) had two hits apiece.
