Trio Of Losses Mars Final Day In Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

CLERMONT, Fla. – Sophomore first-baseman Ciera Clark (Granite Bay, Calif.) and junior catcher Kelsi Ludwigsen (Havre de Grace, Md.) each went 5 for 10, but the Felician College softball team lost all three of its games on Wednesday during the final day of its stay at the National Training Center Spring Games. Felician (4-10) suffered non-conference setbacks to Young Harris College, 15-8, Stonehill College, 4-3, and the University of Findlay, 4-0.

In their afternoon contest, the Golden Falcons combined with Young Harris for 25 base hits and nine walks in a game which lasted two hours, 21 minutes. The Mountain Lions staked starting pitcher Katie-Jo Gentry (Calhoun, Ga.) (3-4) to a 9-0 lead after 2 ½ innings. Felician, the designated home team, struck back for four runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by Clark's two-run single and a two-run triple by Ludwigsen.

YHC scored five more times in the top of the fifth for a 14-4 advantage, but the Golden Falcons avoided a run-rule shortened affair by tallying three times in the bottom of the frame. Felician, however, left the bases loaded in the inning, and could not draw closer than a seven-run deficit the rest of the way.

Gentry fought through 4 1/3 innings, with only three of the seven runs she allowed being earned. She struck out five batters and walked two. YHC leadoff batter Paige Sexton (Canton, Ga.) was 3 for 4 with three runs scored and two driven in, and teammates Molly Watson (Cumming, Ga.) and Tori Dyer (Blairsville, Ga.) also had three hits each as the 7-8-9 batters in the Mountain Lion order went 7 for 11.

Clark was 3 for 4 with a double and three RBI for Felician and Ludwigsen registered a double and a triple in their team's 10-hit attack. Designated player Joelle Erickson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) also drove in two runs.

Stonehill (2-5) out-hit the Golden Falcons, 13-6, as the sun set in Clermont, but needed a two-out RBI single from junior right fielder Brianna Gunter (Amherst, N.H.) in the top of the seventh inning to escape with a 4-3 victory. Skyhawk senior Nicole Eisenmann (East Bridgewater, Mass.) (1-0) pitched the final three innings to earn the victory, and also went 3 for 3 with a double and scored the go-ahead run on Gunter's hit.

Stonehill opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the fourth off of Felician senior right-hander Kristen Tenwolde (Ramona, Calif.). Zharde Sellona (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the inning to put Felician on the scoreboard, and the Golden Falcons drew even in the fifth on run-scoring singles from Clark and Ludwigsen. In the bottom of the seventh, Felician put two runners on base with one out, but Eisenmann induced a fielder's choice grounder and a line-out to end the game.

Ludwigsen was 2 for 4 to pace the Golden Falcons. Skyhawk senior Kelsey Wilcox (Canterbury, Conn.) was 3 for 4. Tenwolde pitched a complete game with six strikeouts and two walks.

On Wednesday night, Felician fell victim to a seven-hit shutout by Findlay freshman righty Bonnie Zappitelli (Mentor, Ohio) (1-1). Felician left seven runners on base, including two each in the final three frames.

Tenwolde started her second game of the night for Felician, and the Oilers (4-2) pounced with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. An RBI single by Emily Reynolds (Wayne, Ohio) capped the rally. Junior third-baseman Jackie Messersmith (McCutcheonville, Ohio) gave Findlay some breathing room with a two-run, two-out single in the fourth.

The Golden Falcons saw seven different players record a base hit, with Ludwigsen's double leading off the fifth the only one to go for extra bases. Tenwolde (2-5) was charged with four earned runs on eight hits in four innings with four strikeouts.

Carly Borders (Lake Villa, Ill.) went 2 for 3 to pace the Oilers, Zappitelli registered six strikeouts and no walks in the complete-game effort.

Felician is idle until opening up Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Goldey-Beacom College on Saturday, March 16, in Wilmington, Del.
