Baseball Sweeps USciences Behind Brill's Big Hit

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PHILADELPHIA – A go-ahead, two-out, two-run single in the top of the ninth inning by junior shortstop Aaron Brill (West Palm Beach, Fla.) lifted Felician College to a 3-2 Game 2 victory and a sweep of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference baseball doubleheader over host University of the Sciences on Thursday afternoon at Richie Ashburn Field. Felician collected 16 base hits in capturing the day's opening game, 11-6.

Juniors Jay Collazo (Wall, N.J.) and Chris Ayala (Marlboro, N.J.) picked up two hits in each game for Felician (13-22, 5-6 CACC), and senior Mike Farrell (Red Bank, N.J.) also hit safely four times on the day. Ayala is 7 for 12 in his last three games after starting the season 2 for 30. Golden Falcon sophomore pitcher Jack Fowler (Shrewsbury, N.J.) earned a four-inning save in Game 1 before scoring the tying run as a pinch-runner in the nightcap.

Game 2 was knotted, 1-1, after six frames. USciences scratched across an unearned run off of Felician reliever John Holland (Jackson, N.J.) (2-2) in the bottom of the seventh to pull ahead. Devil senior Ronnie Petito (Cape Coral, Fla.), who had doubled and moved up on a wild pitch, came home on a two-out fielding error.

The Golden Falcons, meanwhile, were having trouble solving USciences freshman right-handed pitcher C.J. Hertz (Magnolia, N.J.) (2-4). The only blemish on Hertz's ledger through eight innings had come in the fifth, when Collazo led off with a pinch-hit double and scored three batters later on another double by Jordan Tackett (Fredericksburg, Va.). Hertz took the hill for the ninth having allowed seven hits and stranded seven Felician runners.

But Ayala reached Hertz for a single with one out, and third-baseman Petito was charged with a double-error on Tackett's ground ball, putting runners on second and third. Following an intentional walk and a line-out, Brill muscled a ground ball through the left side, plating Fowler and Tackett to put the visitors ahead. Felician junior righty Stephen Paladino (Staten Island, N.Y.) worked around a leadoff single to retire the side in the home half of the ninth and gain his first save of 2013.

Holland allowed no earned runs on two hits and struck out three in three innings of relief work to earn the victory. Hertz had eight strikeouts and three walks in a complete game effort. Mike Gartland (Gloucester City, N.J.) was 3 for 4 for the Devils, who left 11 men on base. Golden Falcon starter Matthew Facendo (Hazlet, N.J.) struck out six batters in five innings in a no-decision.

Felician struck for five runs on six hits in the first inning of Game 1, and led, 7-2 after three. The Devils pulled to within 9-6 by scoring four times in the bottom of the fifth, but Fowler shut the door to pick up his second save in as many days. The left-hander gave up one hit in four scoreless innings and struck out five.

Golden Falcon sophomore lefty Jerry Vasto (Atlantic Highlands, N.J.) (2-1) battled through five innings, departing after 115 pitches. He allowed six hits, struck out six and walked two. Farrell was 3 for 5 with a double and three RBI, and Tackett and Scott De Jong (North Haledon, N.J.) had two hits and three RBI apiece for Felician. Freshman right-fielder Matt Caposio (Staten Island, N.Y.) hit a solo home run in the third.

Sophomore Kyle O'Brien (Orwigsburg, Pa.) went 2 for 4 and drove in a pair of runs for USciences (11-16, 3-8).

Felician passed the halfway point in its CACC schedule, and moved into seventh place on the 11-team conference table. The top six teams at season's end will qualify for the league playoffs.
