Box Score LYNDHURST, N.J. – Four Felician College pitchers combined to record nine strikeouts without allowing an earned run as the Golden Falcons defeated visiting Bloomfield College, 5-3, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference baseball action on a pleasant Wednesday afternoon at the Lyndhurst Recreation Complex. Junior Aaron Brill (West Palm Beach, Fla./John I. Leonard) and senior Jonathan Arche (Miami, Fla./John A. Ferguson) stroked run-scoring triples for Felician (17-25, 9-8 CACC).
Felician moved into fifth place in the 11-team CACC with three league games remaining. Finishing in the top six would qualify the Golden Falcons for the conference playoffs, and ending up third or fourth would give them a home game in the May 7 playdown round. Felician hosts Bloomfield again on Thursday before entertaining sixth-place Chestnut Hill College for a Saturday evening doubleheader.
On Wednesday, the Deacons (5-28, 3-12) took the early lead when, with two on and two out in the first inning, a fly ball to left field by Bloomfield junior Paul Chong (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) was misplayed for a three-base error. The two unearned runs were the only blemishes on the tally of Felician sophomore left-hander Jack Fowler (Shrewsbury, N.J./Red Bank Regional). Making his first start of the season after 24 relief appearances, Fowler (3-3) allowed four hits, struck out four, and walked one over five innings.
The hosts picked up a run on a bases-loaded walk to Ralph Caccavale (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) in the second, then took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth. After the Golden Falcons loaded the bases with none out, Deacon hurler Blas Polanco (Paterson, N.J./Eastside) (1-3) looked like he would escape trouble when he induced a line-drive double play. But Brill then muscled a ball through the right side that rolled into the gap for a go-ahead two-run triple.
Felician rallied for another pair of runs off of the Bloomfield bullpen in the seventh. Arche, who entered mid-game as an injury replacement, drilled an RBI triple down the left-field foul line and scored on Chris Ayala's (Marlboro, N.J./Marlboro) grounder. Arche also doubled and finished 2 for 2.
A trio of right-handers came out of the Golden Falcon bullpen to secure the victory for Fowler. Freshman John Holland (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) struck out three batters in two scoreless frames, and senior Vic Monteagudo (West Palm Beach, Fla./John I. Leonard) yielded an unearned run in the eighth. Senior Brett Hauber (Deposit, N.Y./Deposit) then pitched a perfect ninth with two punchouts to collect his second save in as many games.
Polanco worked through five innings, giving up three runs on five hits for Bloomfield, which out-hit its hosts, 8-7. Ayala finished 2 for 4 with a double for the Golden Falcons, while the Deacons' Felipe Medrano (Santiago, Dominican Republic/Nuestra Seniora de Fatima) was 2 for 3.
Felician junior left fielder Chris Faber (Neptune, N.J./Neptune) was hit by a pitch three times, one shy of the school record held by Mike Libretta.
