Kutztown Shuts Down Felician Offense

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Despite receiving a complete-game two-hitter from senior right-handed pitcher Kristen Tenwolde (Ramona, Calif.), Felician College was defeated by host Kutztown University, 2-0, in Game 1 of the teams' non-conference softball doubleheader on Monday afternoon at North Campus Field. Kutztown scored 10 runs in the first two innings of Game 2 and gained the sweep with an 11-0, five-inning victory.

The Golden Bears (16-16) sent sophomore Dominique Ficara (Swedesboro, N.J.) (10-9) to the pitching circle for both ends of the twinbill, and the right-hander, a transfer from Division-I Hofstra University, responded with a pair of complete-game shutouts. She gave up just seven hits over a combined 12 innings, and did not walk or hit a batter on the day.

Junior catcher Kelsi Ludwigsen (Havre de Grace, Md.) was the only Felician player to have a base hit in each game. In Game 2, Golden Falcon sophomore third-baseman Taylor Parker (Surrey, British Columbia) led off the top of the second inning with a double to center field. It was her 14th two-bagger of 2013, tying the Felician single-season record. Jenna Krowl produced 14 doubles in 2006. Parker was sacrificed to third base but left stranded in what represented Felician's best scoring opportunity of the game.

In the nightcap, Kutztown picked up five runs on five hits in the first inning, then put the game away with five more runs on just two base hits in the second. Felician pitcher Macy Chase (Sacramento, Calif.) was guilty of three hit batsmen in the inning, including the first two. Chase (4-5) was charged with all 11 runs on nine hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Ficara allowed four hits and struck out three batters in the five-inning shutout. Golden Bear freshman Jessica Kurtz (Pottstown, Pa.) was 2 for 2 with two RBI, and teammate Nicole Henninger (Reading, Pa.) had a two-run double. Sophomore Natalie Quintanilla (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) doubled for Felician (11-21).

Tenwolde (6-12) and Ficara were locked in a pitchers' duel for a majority of Game 1, with both runs and hits at a premium. Kutztown broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning after Tenwolde issued walks to the first two hitters. A single by Colleen Smith (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) loaded the bases, and Henninger lofted a fly ball that was likely to score the game's first run. When the ball was misplayed, Katie Lynch (Willow Street, Pa.) came around from second base for a 2-0 Golden Bear advantage.

Ludwigsen singled with one out in the seventh, but Ficara retired the final two hitters on a liner and groundout for a three-hit shutout. Ficara threw only 76 pitches (52 for strikes) and faced four batters over the minimum. Smith had both hits off Tenwolde, who struck out four but walked five. Gina Piserchio (West Orange, N.J.) and Halei Van Dyke (West Milford, N.J.) generated the other Felician safeties.

Felician has been shut out in Tenwolde's last two starts, during which she has given up just three runs on six hits.

Kutztown was a Division II national semifinalist in 2012.
