Softball Begins CACC Play With Two Tight Losses

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEW CASTLE, Del. – The Felician College softball team surrendered a pair of late leads in dropping both ends of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader to host Wilmington (Del.) University, 7-6 and 4-2, on Saturday afternoon at Asbury Field. The games marked the beginning of 2014 CACC play for both schools.

In Game 1, Felician received a go-ahead, two-run double from Halei Van Dyke (West Milford, N.J.) in the top of the sixth inning to cap a three-run rally and take its first lead of the day, 5-4. But Wilmington (5-11, 2-0 CACC) used two walks and an error to get back on the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame, and the teams headed into the seventh tied, 5-5.

Golden Falcon senior catcher Kelsi Ludwigsen (Havre de Grace, Md.) came through with an RBI single in the road half of the seventh, plating Natalie Quintanilla (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.), who had walked, to put Felician ahead once again. But the bottom of the seventh proved disastrous for the visitors.

Felician reliever Macy Chase (Sacramento, Calif.) (0-5) issued a leadoff walk to Cambria Ziemba (Wilmington, Del.), who then beat the throw to second base on Shannon McMahon's (South Plainfield, N.J.) sacrifice bunt attempt. A hit batsman loaded the bases. The Golden Falcons recorded a force at the plate for the first out, but Miranda Pedersen (El Segundo, Calif.) was hit by a pitch to tie the game. Chase then let loose with a wild pitch to allow Kelsey Doherty (Harbeson, Del.) to come home with the winning run.

Chase suffered the loss despite not allowing a hit in 2 2/3 innings of relief work. Ludwigsen was 3 for 4 and Ciera Clark (Granite Bay, Calif.) hit a two-run home run for Felician (4-9, 0-2).

Wilmington drew 11 walks in the contest. Leadoff batter Doherty was 2 for 4 and scored three runs, while Michelle Pasaniti (Sicklerville, N.J.) had a pair of doubles and drove in two runs. Sophomore right-hander Jen Fishback (Camden, Del.) (2-2) allowed one run over 1 2/3 innings of relief to earn the victory.

Two Wildcat pitchers combined on a three-hitter in the nightcap. Felician, however, led, 2-1, after five innings on the speed of junior center fielder Haylee Williams (Carlsbad, Calif.). After starting the top of the fifth with a single, Williams was sacrificed to second base, and scored after a pair of wild pitches.

But Wilmington rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth off of Golden Falcon freshman righty Alleigha Robinson (Kent, Wash.) (2-1). With runners on first and second and two outs, Doherty's single to right field tied the game. Doherty stole second base, and Meghan Logullo (Middletown, Del.) followed with a go-ahead two-run single.

Wildcat pitcher Colby Wyatt (Harrington, Del.) (1-1) retired Felician in order in the top of the seventh to complete her team's sweep. Wyatt tossed 2 1/3 innings of hitless relief.

Felician's other two hits came in the third inning, when Aimee Lopez (Riverbank, Calif.) led off with a single and scored three batters later on an RBI single from Zharde Sellona (Aliso Viejo, Calif.). Robinson gave up six hits, struck out four, and walked four in a complete game effort. Logullo was 2 for 4 for the Wildcats.
