Chase Saves Softball's Home-Opening Sweep Of STAC

| Box Score 2

LYNDHURST, N.J. – Junior right-hander Macy Chase (Sacramento, Calif./Bradshaw Christian) recorded three consecutive outs with the potential tying and go-ahead runs on base in the top of the seventh inning to give Felician College a 4-3 Game 2 victory and a sweep of its non-conference softball doubleheader over visiting St. Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday afternoon at Matera Field. Felician won the day's first game, 13-1, in five innings.

Felician (6-9), which was playing its 2014 home openers, earned two victories in the same day for the first time this season. Junior Natalie Quintanilla (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Immaculate Conception) went 5 for 7 on the day, while Chase (1-5) earned the victory in Game 1 and a save in Game 2. Sophomore Samantha McDonald (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) had two hits in each game for St. Thomas Aquinas.

With the Golden Falcons clinging to a 3-1 edge, Chase entered in the sixth inning of the nightcap with runners on first and second and one out. She struck out the first two hitters she faced to escape the jam. Felician then posted what proved to be a key insurance run in the home half of the sixth when Mercedes Montanez (Vista, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista) drew a leadoff walk, advanced on a throwing error, and scored on a double by freshman Jackie Duenas (Riverside, Calif./Arlington).

Chase yielded base hits to the first four Spartans to bat in the seventh, allowing the visitors to pull within 4-3. She then logged a fielder's choice grounder, a strikeout, and a pop-up for her first save of the season. Freshman Alleigha Robinson (Kent, Wash./Kentlake) (3-1) earned the victory, allowing one run on five hits with three strikeouts in 5 1/3 frames.

Freshman righty Julie Sosnicki (Lyndhurst, N.J./Rutherford) (1-3) took the hard-luck loss in the circle for STAC (1-9). She went the distance on a four-hitter, giving up two earned runs with four strikeouts and two walks. She was also 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI. Felician scored three times in the first inning when Montanez blasted a two-run triple and continued home on a throwing error.

With Tuesday's twinbill originally scheduled to be played at STAC, the Spartans batted last in Game 1. Felician took advantage by immediately jumping out to a three-run lead, and then scoring five times in both the second and third stanzas. The Golden Falcons out-hit the Spartans, 16-5, for the game.

Quintanilla was 4 for 4 plus a walk and scored three times from the leadoff spot in the Felician batting order. Senior second-baseman Halei Van Dyke (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) was 3 for 3 with a double and two RBI, and junior first-baseman Ciera Clark (Granite Bay, Calif./Del Oro) posted two doubles and three RBI. Five Golden Falcon starters enjoyed multiple-hit games.

Chase started and pitched three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out three. Freshman Desiree Balistrieri (Elmwood Park, N.J./Elmwood Park) surrendered one run on four hits in two innings of work.
