Wacky Game 1 Win Proves Historic For Clark

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LAKEWOOD, N.J. – Junior first-baseman Ciera Clark (Granite Bay, Calif.) established three all-time Felician College records during the Golden Falcons' 13-12, eight-inning victory over host Georgian Court University in Game 1 of the teams' Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader on Friday afternoon at GCU Field 1. It was Felician's first win over Georgian Court since 2007, as the Golden Falcons ended a 13-game losing streak to the Lions.

GCU (11-12, 5-1 CACC) rebounded for a 7-0 triumph in the nightcap. The Lions pounded out 27 base hits on the day. GCU sophomore catcher Meghan Sfraga (Land O Lakes, Fla.) was 5 for 8, had a home run in each game, and scored five runs.

Friday's opening game lasted two hours, 26 minutes. Felician out-hit the Lions, 18-12. Clark was 4 for 4 with a double, two home runs, three runs scored, and five runs batted in. In the process, she became the Golden Falcons' career leader in doubles (31), RBI (85) and multi-home run games (3). The doubles record formerly belonged to Jenna Krowl, while the latter two were held by Lauren DeGrushe.

Felician junior right fielder Natalie Quintanilla (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) led off the game with her first collegiate homer. One out later, a solo blast from Clark gave the Golden Falcons a 2-0 lead. That score held until the top of the fifth inning, when Clark's two-run homer to left made it 4-0.

Golden Falcon senior pitcher Tori Bradburn (Ridge, Md.) carried a one-hit shutout into the sixth inning, and her offense gave her some more breathing room when a two-run double by Clark highlighted a four-run top of the sixth. With Felician needing three outs to win the game via the NCAA eight-run rule, GCU instead got back into the game by touching up Bradburn and two relievers for seven runs on six hits in the home half of the sixth.

Felician tacked on a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Chelsea DeGuzman (Clermont, Fla.), but Sfraga hit a two-run homer to force extra frames. In the top of the eighth, the Golden Falcons took advantage of two Lion errors to tally four unearned runs and move ahead 13-9. But three GCU hits and an outfield error put the winning run at the plate in the bottom of the inning before junior right-hander Macy Chase (Sacramento, Calif.) induced a fielder's choice grounder to secure the Golden Falcon victory.

DeGuzman was 3 for 4 and Haylee Williams (Carlsbad, Calif.) stole two bases and scored three runs for Felician (9-12, 1-5). GCU shortstop Briana Molino (Williamstown, N.J.) was 3 for 4. Felician had nine extra-base hits in the contest.

Lion freshman pitcher Abigail Merryman (Sewell, N.J.) spun a two-hit shutout in Game 2, striking out three batters and walking two. Georgian Court took full control with five first-inning scores, touched off by a two-run double from Taylor McDonough (Toms River, N.J.). Sfraga and Justine Mattia (Williamstown, N.J.) hit solo homers, while Sfraga and Kelly Hardiman (Howell, N.J.) were each 3 for 3.

Juniors Taylor Parker (Surrey, British Columbia) and Aimee Lopez (Riverbank, Calif.) singled for Felician.
