Clark Drives In Seven As Softball Halves Wednesday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. – Felician College junior first-baseman Ciera Clark (Granite Bay, Calif.) went 5 for 7 and drove in seven runs as the Golden Falcons split a pair of non-conference softball contests during the Dot Richardson Spring Games on Wednesday at Hancock Park. Felician (4-6) defeated Walsh University, 7-2, during its morning game before losing, 5-4, to Dowling College on Wednesday afternoon.

Felician freshman right-hander Alleigha Robinson (Kent, Wash.) (2-0) made her first collegiate pitching start against Walsh, and came within one batter of a shutout. She settled for a complete-game four-hitter with two strikeouts and five walks.

Felician, the designated home team, dented the scoreboard in the opening inning when Alyssa Banca (East Rutherford, N.J.) doubled with one out and came home two batters later on a Clark single. A two-run double by Halei Van Dyke (West Milford, N.J.) capped a two-out third inning rally for the Golden Falcons for a 3-0 edge.

Felician broke the game open in the fourth. Mercedes Montanez (Vista, Calif.) extended a Golden Falcon rally with a two-out walk, brining up Clark with the bases loaded. Clark unleashed a deep fly ball to straightaway center field for a grand slam home run to finish 3 for 3 with five RBI.

Robinson carried a two-hit shutout into the top of the seventh, but yielded a walk and a single with one out. After a fielder's choice grounder, Walsh junior shortstop Sam Troxell (Cuyohoga Falls, Ohio) sent a double to deep right field. Both runners scored, but Felician trapped Troxell between second and third and tagged her out to end the game.

Senior designated player Kelsi Ludwigsen (Havre de Grace, Md.) went 2 for 3 to support Felician's nine-hit attack. Felician tallied all seven of its runs after with two outs. Leadoff batter Chelsy Testa (Uniontown, Ohio) was 2 for 3 for the Cavaliers (6-3). Clark's grand slam was the first by a Golden Falcon since Van Dyke hit one in each game of a doubleheader at Nyack College on Apr. 11, 2012.

Clark got Felician, the designated visiting team, out to a 2-0 lead against Dowling with RBI singles in the first and second innings, plating Banca each time. But the Golden Lions answered with a five-spot in the bottom of the second, putting a premature end to the first career pitching start of Golden Falcon freshman Desiree Balistrieri (Elmwood Park, N.J.) (0-1).

Junior left fielder Chelsea DeGuzman (Clermont, Fla.) lined a two-run triple in the top of the third to pull Felician to within 5-4, but that completed the game's scoring. Macy Chase (Sacramento, Calif.) pitched five innings of scoreless, two-hit relief for the Golden Falcons, while Dowling senior Michele Andrews (Commack, N.Y.) shut down Felician over the final four frames.

Felician put two runners on base with one out in the top of the seventh, but Andrews struck out the final two hitters to earn the victory. Crystal Tarango (Fontana, Calif.) had a two-run homer among two hits for Dowling (4-3).

Banca and DeGuzman joined Clark with multi-hit games for Felician. Banca was 3 for 8 and scored three times on the day.
