Owls Defeat Golden Falcons In Rain, 11-5

Box Score

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Felician College softball team concluded its season-opening stay at the 2014 Dot Richardson Spring Games with an 11-5 non-conference loss to Southern Connecticut State University on Thursday morning at the National Training Center. Felician will return home with a won-lost record of 4-7.

The contest was played through a steady rain that intensified as the morning progressed. The weather caused the cancellation of Felician's other two games scheduled for Thursday, against Notre Dame (Ohio) College and Illinois College.

Felician junior Chelsea DeGuzman (Clermont, Fla.) was 3 for 3 with a double and two runs batted in. Classmate Ciera Clark (Granite Bay, Calif.) also collected a double among three hits. Clark is 10 for her last 14 and is batting .514 on the year.

The Golden Falcons, the designated home team, came up with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 5-5. DeGuzman drove a one-out RBI double and scored on a single by Alyssa Banca (East Rutherford, N.J.). But Southern Connecticut State (3-0) came right back with three in the top of the fifth, moving back ahead on Kaley Marden's (Fremont, Calif.) two-run single. The Owls tacked on three more runs in the sixth.

SCSU struck for 13 base hits and drew 11 walks. Freshman third-baseman Leanna Feerick (Maybrook, N.Y.) was 4 for 4 with a triple. Sophomore pitcher Yesenia Evaristo (Bethel, Conn.) was the beneficiary of the Owls' offensive production, scattering five earned runs and nine hits in a complete game effort. Evaristo struck out six batters and walked three.

Felician junior right-hander Macy Chase (Sacramento, Calif.) (0-4) suffered the loss in relief, despite striking out a season-high five batters. Chase surrendered six runs (four earned) on seven hits in five frames.

Banca drove in a pair of runs from her leadoff spot in the Felician batting order. Amanda Lopez (Riverbank, Calif.) had one of three Golden Falcon doubles on the day.
