Box Score 2 LYNDHURST, N.J. – Junior center fielder and leadoff hitter Haylee Williams (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) hit her first collegiate home run and posted two base hits and two stolen bases in each game to lead Felician College to victories over visiting Goldey-Beacom College in both ends of the teams' Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball doubleheader, 6-4 and 8-5, on Saturday afternoon at Matera Field.
Felician jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of Game 1 on run-scoring singles by Ciera Clark (Granite Bay, Calif./Del Oro) and Mercedes Montanez (Vista, Calif./Rancho Buena Vista). Goldey-Beacom (7-22, 4-14 CACC) answered with a pair in the top of the second, but Williams' one-out, three run drive over the left-field fence in the home half of the second gave the Golden Falcons the lead for good.
The Lightning pulled to within 5-4 in the fifth on an RBI single by Roni Peters (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) and a Charlee King (New Castle, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) sacrifice fly. But after Felician pitcher Macy Chase (Sacramento, Calif./Bradshaw Christian) (6-9) retired the side in order in the sixth, the Golden Falcons plated an insurance run when Williams' single brought home Halei Van Dyke (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) who had reached on an error. GBC put the tying run on base in the seventh with two outs, but Chase induced a pop-up to shortstop to end the game.
Chase scattered eight hits in a complete-game effort, recording one strikeout and four walks. GBC senior right-hander Courtney Dolson (Gloucester, N.J./Cloucester) (5-10) also went the distance on an eight-hitter. Williams finished 2 for 4 with two runs scored and four runs batted in and classmate Clark was 2 for 3 for Felician (15-17, 7-10). The Lightning's Peters and Ashley Zaccaria (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City) had two hits apiece.
The Golden Falcons snapped a 1-1 tie with seven third-inning runs before hanging on to win the nightcap. All but one of the runs in the big inning were unearned. Chelsea DeGuzman (Clermont, Fla./South Lake) highlighted the frame, during which GBC committed four errors, with a two-run triple.
Lightning reliever Ryann Farley (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) kept Felician off the scoreboard the rest of the way, allowing her team to crawl back into contention. Asia Ellis (Marlton, N.J./Lenape) picked up an RBI double in the fourth inning, and King and Ellis drove in runs in the sixth before GBC loaded the bases with one out, bringing the tying run to the plate. But DeGuzman snared a line drive in left field and doubled off the runner at third base to bring the hosts out of harm's way.
The Lightning threatened again in the seventh against freshman Dyonna Pagliocca (Wood-Ridge, N.J./Wood-Ridge), the third Felician pitcher of the game. With two outs and two runners on base, King lined an RBI single to left field, which once again would have brought the tying run to the plate. But the runner from first base took too big a turn around second and Felician catcher Kelsi Ludwigsen (Havre de Grace, Md./Harford Tech), after fielding the throw from the outfield, made a snap throw to third base. The runner was trapped in a rundown and tagged out by third-sacker Taylor Parker (Surrey, British Columbia/Semiahmoo) for the final out.
Felician senior Tori Bradburn (Ridge, Md./Great Mills) (6-6) pitched four innings to earn the win, giving up one earned run on five hits. Williams and Zharde Sellona (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Aliso Niguel) were each 2 for 4 for the Golden Falcons. King finished 3 for 4 with 3 RBI for the Lightning. Felician stole five bases in the game and eight for the day.
