Softball Gets To .500 With Sweep Of Nyack

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The Felician College softball team improved its overall winning percentage to .500 for the first time this season by capturing both ends of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader from host Nyack College, 7-3 and 5-2, on Thursday afternoon at the Orangetown Little League Complex. Felician (18-18, 10-11 CACC) has won five of its last six games.

Golden Falcon junior outfielder Haylee Williams (Carlsbad, Calif.) was hit by a pitch in the second inning of Game 1 and scored on a triple by senior Alyssa Banca (East Rutherford, N.J.). It was the 36th run scored by Williams in 2014, matching the Felician single-season record established last year by teammate Aimee Lopez (Riverbank, Calif.).

In Game 2, Felician junior first-baseman Ciera Clark (Granite Bay, Calif.) drove in her 41st run of the season with a fifth-inning sacrifice fly, breaking her own single-season school RBI record. In the top of the seventh, Clark's solo home run was the 21st of her college career, matching Lauren DeGrushe (2008-11) for the Golden Falcons' all-time home run record.

After Nyack (2-28, 2-18) tallied two unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning of the day's opening game, Felician took the lead for good with three runs in the second. Kelsi Ludwigsen (Havre de Grace, Md.) drew a one-out walk, advanced to third base on a single by Lopez, and continued home on an outfield error. Williams was then plunked, and Banca followed with her two-run triple to right field.

Felician added a pair of runs in the third inning when Chelsea DeGuzman (Clermont, Fla.) delivered an RBI double and later scored on a groundout by Halei Van Dyke (West Milford, N.J.). After the Warriors pulled to within 5-3 with a fourth-inning score, the Golden Falcons plated two insurance runs in the fifth.

Senior right-hander Tori Bradburn (Ridge, Md.) (8-6) struck out six batters and gave up one earned run over four innings to earn the victory, and freshman righty Alleigha Robinson (Kent, Wash.) tossed three scoreless, one-hit frames and was credited with her first collegiate save. Banca and Lopez were each 2 for 4, while Ludwigsen went 1 for 1 plus three walks. Junior first-baseman Megan Richards (Nanuet, N.Y.) went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI for Nyack.

Felician junior Macy Chase (Sacramento, Calif.) (7-9) pitched a complete game in the nightcap, throwing 122 pitches but allowing only single runs in the first and seventh frames. The Warriors had 10 hits and five walks, but left 12 runners on base.

In the top of the first inning, Zharde Sellona (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) scored from second base on Banca's infield single. Two outs later, Banca came home on a single by Mercedes Montanez (Vista, Calif.).

The score remained 2-1 until the Golden Falcons scored two insurance runs in the fifth inning on Clark's sacrifice fly and a run-scoring single by Taylor Parker (Surrey, British Columbia). Clark's two-out solo homer in the seventh concluded the Felician scoring.

Nyack out-hit the Golden Falcons, 10-9. Parker was 3 for 4 for Felician. Junior center fielder Elaina Vasquez (Gilroy, Calif.) was 2 for 3 with a double and drove in both Warrior runs. Sophomore pitcher Christine Kline (Midland Park, N.J.) went the distance on a nine-hitter and also was 2 for 4 for Nyack.
