With the victories, Felician (22-15, 13-5 CACC) secured a berth in the 2014 CACC Tournament. It will be the Golden Falcons' third consecutive trip to the conference playoffs and seventh in the last nine seasons. With two regular-season conference games remaining, Felician is still in the hunt for one of two byes past the tournament's playdown round.
Felician senior right fielder/catcher Jay Collazo (Wall, N.J./Manasquan) was 6 for 8 with three doubles and five runs batted in during Wednesday's twinbill. Golden Falcon freshman third-baseman J.R. Meneses (Lake Worth, Fla./Zion Lutheran) collected five hits on the day.
In Game 1, Vasto (5-2) combined with two relievers on a one-hit shutout. He issued three walks and one hit batsman in a 99-pitch effort, with an opposite field single by Caldwell senior Thomas Pisano (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) with one out in the top of the fifth inning the only other blemish on his line. Vasto ran his scoreless inning streak to 17, during which he has allowed only five hits.
The Golden Falcon offense, meanwhile, dented the scoreboard in five of the first six innings. Joe Petosa (Spotswood, N.J./Spotswood) produced a two-out run-scoring single in the bottom of the first, and Scott De Jong (North Haledon, N.J./Eastern Christian) dropped in a two-run single, also with two away, in the third. Felician then broke the game open with a three-run fourth. Matt Kleinstein (Marlboro, N.J./Colts Neck) came home on a bases-loaded wild pitch, and Collazo followed two batters later with a two-run single.
Gabriel Fellin (Temple, Pa./Muhlenberg) had a two-run single in the fifth inning, and Meneses concluded the scoring with an RBI single in the sixth. Lawrence Schoer (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) and Joe Neri (Laurence Harbor, N.J./Old Bridge) pitched hitless innings to complete the Golden Falcon victory. Collazo, Meneses, Kleinstein and Fellin had three hits apiece in Felician's 16-hit attack.
Fowler (6-2) pitched into and out of trouble throughout his six innings of work in Game 2, using the strikeout to escape several mini-jams. His offense staked him to a 4-0 lead after four innings. Collazo looped an RBI double in the first inning, and Brennan Price (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) brought home a run with a third-inning groundout. In the fourth, Ralph Caccavale (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) scored on a throwing error and Collazo followed with another run-scoring double.
The Cougars broke through in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Anthony Caruso (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon), but left the bases loaded. Felician then took control with two runs in the home half of the sixth, before putting the game away with a four-run seventh.
Felician leadoff man Aaron Brill (West Palm Beach, Fla./John I. Leonard) was 3 for 3 with a triple and scored twice, and Collazo and Caccavale also picked up three hits. Pisano and Paul Nyitray (Cranford, N.J./St. Joseph) enjoyed multi-hit games for Caldwell (4-23, 1-15).
