Felician Tops Pioneers Behind Vasto, Brill

Box Score

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Junior left-handed pitcher Jerry Vasto (Atlantic Highlands, N.J.) combined with four relievers on a five-hit shutout and senior shortstop Aaron Brill (West Palm Beach, Fla.) was on base six times as the Felician College baseball team earned a 15-0 non-conference victory over host LIU Post on Tuesday afternoon on the LIU Post campus.

Brill's 5-for-5 performance led a 19-hit Felician offensive attack. In the top of the third inning, he blasted an RBI triple to straightaway center field, setting a Golden Falcon record with his 11th three-bagger of the season. Vinnie DiBenedetti had 10 in 2008. Brill who leads NCAA Division II in triples per game, also walked on the day. He was left on deck in the top of the ninth inning and not given an opportunity to tie the school record of six hits in a game.

Vasto, meanwhile, ran his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 22. With a light rain falling and his team already ahead, 9-0, he was lifted after five innings and 83 pitches. Vasto (6-2), who has won his last three starts, allowed two hits, struck out seven batters and walked two.

Felician (25-17) posted five runs on just two hits in the top of the second inning. Junior catcher Korey McGuiness (Jackson, N.J.) opened the scoring with a one-out RBI single. One out later, the Golden Falcons drew three consecutive walks, including Scott De Jong (North Haledon, N.J.) with the bases loaded. Following a pitching change, Gabriel Fellin (Temple, Pa.) scored on a wild pitch and Joe Petosa (Spotswood, N.J.) capped the rally with a two-run single.

Felician broke the game open with four more runs in the third. Brill's record-setting triple highlighted the frame. The score remained 9-0 until the Golden Falcons took advantage of the Pioneer bullpen for six eighth-inning runs, including a two-run single by reserve infielder Rob Fisher (Matawan, N.J.).

Right-hander Joe Neri (Laurence Harbor, N.J.) worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth, and southpaw Joe Schultheis (Bethpage, N.Y.) pitched a perfect seventh for Felician. Dean Loucka (Wood-Ridge, N.J.) and Billy Rogers (Kendall Park, N.J.) tossed an inning apiece to complete the shutout. All five Pioneer hits were singles.

Brill scored three runs and drove in a pair. Freshman third-baseman J.R. Meneses (Lake Worth, Fla.) was 3 for 5 for the visitors, and Petosa finished with three RBI. Chris Faber (Neptune, N.J.) was 2 for 2 off the Golden Falcon bench.
