Softball Restarts Season, Loses Two At Post

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Felician College softball team was limited to six base hits in dropping both ends of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader to host Post University, 8-0 and 4-2, on Monday afternoon at Lamoy Field.

Felician (3-10, 0-2 CACC) was playing for the first time since Mar. 5, and participating in its first CACC affairs of the season. The Golden Falcons had 14 games postponed or cancelled due to weather-related issues since returning from its spring break trip to Florida.

In Game 1 on Monday, Felician fell victim to a five-inning, four-hit shutout by Eagle senior right-hander Kaitlin Derby (Douglaston, N.Y.). Post scored once in the bottom of the first inning, then took control with six unearned runs in the third. The Golden Falcons committed three errors in the frame. An RBI double by Kayla Kresley (Alburtis, Pa.) in the fourth and a perfect fifth by Derby allowed the Eagles to shorten the game.

All four Felician hits were singles. Leadoff hitter Zharde Sellona (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) finished 1 for 1 with a sacrifice for the visitors. Post catcher Kathryn Dawson (Newfield, N.H.) was 3 for 3, and fellow sophomore Natalie Lennox (Landenburg, Pa.) was 2 for 2 with a triple and scored twice.

Felician freshman pitcher Kaila Gerber (Vincentown, N.J.) made her collegiate debut when she started the nightcap. Gerber logged three no-hit innings, then was staked to a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Junior Amanda Lopez (Riverbank, Calif.) drew a two-out walk, advanced to second base on a passed ball and stole third. Two batters later, she came home on a single by senior Taylor Parker (Surrey, British Columbia).

The Eagles, however, broke out for four runs in the home half of the fourth. Post (7-9, 3-1) needed only two hits, and was aided by three walks, an error, a passed ball and a wild pitch.

Felician pulled to within 4-2 when Ciera Clark (Granite Bay, Calif.) hit a solo homerun in the sixth, her fifth round-tripper of the season. Eagle pitcher Samantha Esque (Springfield, Pa.) recovered to retire the last five Golden Falcons and finish off a two-hitter. Esque struck out five batters and walked two.

Gerber went the distance on a four-hitter, yielding one earned run on six hits with four strikeouts. Kresley and Nicole Venturini (Scituate, R.I.) stroked two hits apiece for the Eagles.

Felician's home opener on Tuesday against Bloomfield College at Matera Field has been moved up to an 11 a.m. start in an attempt to avoid projected late-day rain.
